Yuan Tied for Fourth; Huskies Seventh After Three Rounds at Pac-12s
April 24, 2018 | Men's Golf
ROLLING HILLS ESTATE, Calif. --- Carl Yuan remained in the top five with a 1-under-par 70 while junior William Mansfield moved into the top 25 with a season-best 69 as the University of Washington men's golf team moved up two spots into a tie for seventh after three rounds of the 2018 Pac-12 Championship on Tuesday at Rolling Hills Golf Club outside of Los Angeles.
The Huskies continued to hang right around par for much the day, finish at 2-under 353 to card a three-round total of 1065 (356-356-353). With one round remaining, Washington is tied with UCLA in that seventh spot, trailing sixth-place Washington State by eight strokes.
Mansfield had the best round of the day for the Huskies and his lowest since joining the team in October. The junior posted two rounds right at par yesterday and was right around par today until he birdied the final three holes to move to 2-under for the day. Mansfield had six birdies on the day including four over the final five holes. That moved him into a tie for 21st in medalist play at 2-under 211 (71-71-69).
Yuan continued his steady play, posting a 1-under 70 on the day to finish round three in a five-way tie for fourth place at 8-under 205 (67-68-70). Yuan opened the day with birdies on two of his first four holes before a bogey on the fifth moved him to 1-under. He would birdie 13 for the second-straight game but struggled again on the final hole (#9), carding a bogey to finish at 1-under.
Frank Garber recovered from a tough first day to post a 1-under 70 in the third round. Garber, likely playing in his final collegiate tournament, started the back nine with three birdies on the first four holes to drop to 2-under before a bogey on the final hole gave him 70. Overall, Garber is tied for 48th with a 4-over 217 (74-73-70).
Henry Lee also improved after a rough start to the tournament, recording an even-par 71. Lee carded 14 pars on the day to go along with two birdies and two bogeys. The 71 gave him a three-round total of 7-over-220 (73-76-71).
Lee is tied with Noah Woolsey at 7-over 220 (79-68-73). Woolsey was at 1-under through the front nine, but carded a double on 12 and bogeys on 15 and 16. He was able to record a birdie on 17 to help finish the round at 2-over 73.
Jan Schneider closed out the UW six with a 5-over 76 and sits at 10-over 223 (71-76-76) through three rounds. Schneider had four bogeys over his first six holes, but recorded birdies on seven and 15 and was at 3-over heading into the final hole. However, hole No. 9 proved to be the second-toughest on the course on the day and Schneider carded a double on the hole to finish at 5-over.
Washington closes out the round on Wednesday, beginning at 8:00 a.m., once again teeing off from the 10th hole to start the day.
