ROLLING HILLS ESTATE, Calif. --- Carl Yuan posted a final round 4-under 67 to finish tied for as the Pac-12 runner-up in medalist play, posting a four-round score of 12-under 272 (67-68-70-67) as the 2018 Pac-12 Championship wrapped up on Wednesday at the Rolling Hills Golf Club outside of Los Angeles.
The Huskies finished ninth overall with a 4-over par 1424 (356-356-353-359) while USC took the team title at 31-under par, narrowly holding off a late charge by Colorado, which finished at -27.
Yuan matched his best round of the tournament, recording seven birdies to just three bogeys to card a 4-under 67. He made a late charge up the leaderboard and pulled within one shot of the leaders with a birdie on 16. He struggled with the final hole—No. 9 on the course—over the first three rounds, but managed a par while Arizona's George Cunningham bogeyed the hole to put the two into a tie for second.
USC's Justin Suh, who entered the final round with a six stroke advantage, struggled early in the round and was within striking distance after back-to-back bogeys on 11 and 12. But an eagle on 15 allowed him to pull away from the field to hold on for the individual title at 16-under 268.
Yuan's impressive finish puts him in contention for an individual berth at the NCAA Regionals which take place May 14-16 at one of six locations.
"Great performance by carl, who played really well today," said Head Coach Alan Murray. "This is one of the best tournaments in college golf and to finish runner up is a real accomplishment. He should be very proud."
"The team struggled a little today," said Murray. "We played good in patches but didn't make enough birdies overall."
William Mansfield capped of his first Pac-12 Championship with a 3-over 74 to finish tied for 34th overall at 1-over 285 (71-71-69-74). Mansfield had an up and down round, especially on the back nine, alternating birdies and bogeys over the first four holes. He would close out the round with a pair of bogeys, but managed an impressive tournament despite this being just his fourth at UW and second as a scorer.
Noah Woolsey posted his best score of the tournament with a 1-over 72 to finish in 58th place. Woolsey carded 13 pars on the day with two birdies and three bogeys.
Henry Lee finished with a 2-over 73 to record a 9-over 293 (73-76-71-73), tying with Frank Garber for 62nd in the overall standings. Garber had a rough final round, posting a 5-over 76 to card a 293 (74-73-70-76). He was at 2-over through the front nine, but a triple on 12 pushed him to +5.
"Frank played his final round as a Husky," said Murray. "We will miss him and wish him well. He had a solid career as a Husky and represented our program in a very positive fashion."
Jan Schneider placed 66th overall with a 12-over 296 (71-76-76-73), rebounding from a tough couple of rounds to card a 2-over 73 on the final day. Schneider got off to a rough start with a bogey and a double on the third and fourth holes, respectively. He would recover with back-to-back birdies on six and seven and played just 1-over the rest of the way.
"Unfortunately we haven't played well enough over the course of the year to make the postseason as a team," said Murray. "Carl and Henry have played well enough as individuals to earn spots at the NCAA Regionals and we await to see where they are sent."
The 2018 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championships selections announcement will take place next Wednesday, May 2 at 6 p.m. ET, on Golf Channel, during Golf Central, and streamed live on the Golf Channel website. 81 teams and 45 individuals will be selected to compete in the six NCAA Men's Regional Championship sites, May 14-16 (13 teams and 10 individuals at three regionals and 14 teams and five individuals at three regionals).
"Time for our returners to get their heads down and get ready for their summer schedules of tournaments and come back in the fall ready to get after it," said Murray.
