GymDawgs Advance To Nationals For Second Straight Year
April 08, 2018 | Gymnastics
STATE COLLEGE, Penn. – Powered by a strong floor performance, the #8 Washington GymDawgs qualified for NCAA Nationals for the second straight year, taking second at the University Park Regional with a score of 196.275.
This will be the seventh trip to Nationals in Washington history and just the second time Washington has made it in back-to-back years. The GymDawgs also went back-to-back in 1997 and 1998. Last year, Washington finished eighth in the nation at Nationals.
"Regionals is an incredibly high-pressure competition and we have a team that is relatively new to that kind of pressure and the expectation to make Nationals," said head coach Elise Ray-Statz. "I could not be more proud of the team's tenacity and belief in themselves, considering the pressure they felt."
Maya Washington, Zoey Schaefer, and Kristyn Hoffa were NCAA Regional champions on floor. Washington, Schaefer, and Hoffa all recorded scores of 9.900 to help Washington put up its highest event score, at 49.350. The trio became the first Regional champions on an individual event for UW since Allison Northey won a beam championship in 2016. Washington's last floor championship came in 2010, when Kristen Linton and Samantha Walior tied for the title.
"We wanted to show everyone Washington is getting better and better, and making it to Nationals consistently is the beginning of that process," said Ray-Statz.
Hailey Burleson, who had a score of 9.850 on floor and 9.825 on beam, would take third in the all-around. She has now had an all-around score of 39.200 or higher every single week this season, averaging a score of 39.386.
Joslyn Goings and Evanni Roberson tied for fourth on beam, with scores of 9.875. That marked the seventh consecutive meet that Roberson has recorded a score over 9.850, a mark Goings has reached in five of the last six meets.
