April 07, 2018 | Men's Golf
SANTA CRUZ, Calif. --- Washington's men's golf team brushed off a delayed start and posted an impressive day, sitting in sixth place at 2-over-par midway through a suspended second round at the Western Intercollegiate on Saturday at Pasatiempo Golf Club.
After heavy rain rolled through overnight, the start of the tournament was pushed back an hour and a half. However, the Huskies didn't seem to mind, posting a first-round score of 4-over 354 with three golfers posting scores of even-par 70. Washington was able to get through about 13 holes of the second round before dark and sat in sixth, dropping a pair of strokes to be at 2-over with just over one round to play. (The tournament features six players with five counting scores.)
Henry Lee was one of the trio of golfers at par after one round, but had a stellar second round. The sophomore dropped five strokes with five birdies and no bogeys through 13 holes. Lee sits at sixth overall in medalist play, just two shots behind the leaders.
Freshman Noah Woolsey continued to play well, sitting at 2-under through 15 holes of the second round after a first-round 70. Woolsey, who is tied for 13th at 2-under overall, after five birdies and three bogeys in the second round. Woolsey opened the competition with an eagle on his first hole—the 13th hole of the course—but had three-straight bogeys on four, five and six. He would close out the round with a two birdies and a bogey.
Senior Frank Garber started strong, recording four birdies over his first five holes. However, he struggled after that and finished at 3-over for the round. His struggles continued at the start of the second with three bogeys over his first five holes, but then had four birdies over his final nine holes before darkness fell. Garber was at even par for the second round and 3-over so far in the tournament.
Freshman Shamu Bodhidatta and senior Carl Yuan were each at 6-over when play was suspended. Bodhidatta recorded a 1-over 71 in the first round with Yuan carding an even-par 70. However, both had a rough second round and went into the black.
Junior William Mansfield, who was making his competitive debut for the Huskies, was at even-par through 14 holes of the second round. Mansfield had a rough start to the day, carding a 12-over 82 over his first round. However, his score was one of the counting scores over halfway through the second round.
The Huskies finish the round beginning at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday, then continue on immediately to the final round.
