First Pac-12 Win Comes in Dramatic 4-3 Match
April 06, 2018 | Men's Tennis
SEATTLE – After freshman Jack Davis came from behind to clinch, Washington men's tennis won an exciting 4-3 match over Arizona Friday evening at Bill Quillian Tennis Stadium. The Huskies improved to 11-9 (1-3 Pac-12) on the season while Arizona dropped to 15-10 (0-4 Pac-12).
At No. 5 singles, Jack Davis found himself in a high-pressure match with Jonas Maier. Court five saw two tiebreakers in the first two sets as well, with Maier winning the first 7-6(2) and Davis winning the second 7-6(2). The two battled back and forth throughout set three, but Davis found himself in a hole, down three games to five. In an impressive performance, Davis won the next four straight games, taking set three and winning the overall match for the Huskies.
"I'm certainly happy for us to get the last point tonight," Washington head coach Matt Anger said. "We've had a few where we didn't and we got this one and we need to get some more."
In doubles action, Jake Douglas and Mitch Stewart came out with an unmatchable energy and cruised to a 6-0 victory on court two. Enzo Sommer and Kawika Lam got out to an early 3-0 lead on court one before Arizona battled back to tie it up at 3-3. Sommer and Lam regained the momentum, however, and were able to finish out the set to win 6-3 and clinch the doubles point for the Huskies. Jack Davis and Alexis Alvarez did not finish after fighting hard. Their match ended with them down 5-2.
In singles, the Huskies dropped all six of the first sets, setting the stage for what would become intense battles on each court. On court one, Douglas turned it around after falling 6-0 in the first set, winning sets two and three 6-3 and 6-4, respectively, and securing the first singles point for the Dawgs.
On court two, Mitch Stewart followed a similar match flow, dropping the first set 6-4. Stewart then found his rhythm, winning set two 6-1 and then taking the match and securing the Huskies their second singles point by winning the third set 6-2.
On court four, Amit Batta found himself in a tiebreaker in the second set after falling in the first set 6-2. Batta fought hard, giving his opponent Alejandro Reguant all he could handle, before Batta ended up dropping the set 7-6(6).
Alexis Alvarez followed the pattern set by other Huskies dropping his first set 6-4 at No. 6 singles. Set two was a completely different story, however, as Alvarez came out on fire to win the set 6-1. Alvarez couldn't quite keep the momentum going into the final set, falling 6-3 to his opponent Trent Botha.
Court three was another battle, with both of the first two sets going to a tiebreaker. Enzo Sommer dropped the first set 7-6(7) but managed to win the tiebreaker and the second set 7-6(3). After jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the third set, Sommer couldn't quite hang on, falling 6-4. This tied the team score between the Huskies and the Wildcats at 3-3, leaving it up to court five.
