Huskies Threaten But Come Up Short In 3-0 Loss To #3 UCLA
April 20, 2018 | Softball
LOS ANGELES – The #1 Washington Huskies fell for just the third time all season, losing to the #3 UCLA Bruins 3-0. Washington threatened all game but could not break through to get on the board. It was only Washington's third loss of the season, putting the Huskies at 41-3 overall.
Taran Alvelo took just her second loss of the season despite another complete-game performance. The junior struck out five but took the loss, allowing multiple runs for just the third time this season. Alvelo is now 21-2 on the year.
The fourth inning made the difference, with Washington loading the bases in the top half beginning with a hot shot single by Sis Bates that evaded a diving third baseman and shortstop. Julia DePonte and Emma Helm would reach via walk and HBP, respectively, only to be stranded.
UCLA responded with a solo home run to start the bottom half, taking the lead for good. Alvelo would rebound by retiring the next six batters she faced, striking out the next batter of the inning on three pitches.
Trysten Melhart singled to start the fifth as Washington threatened once again but couldn't quite get a run across. Kelly Burdick also singled and stole a base in the game.
The Bruins scored twice in the sixth after a leadoff bunt single, making the game's final margin 3-0.
