AZUSA, Calif. – Colby Gilbert moved himself into familiar territory, the top-10 of the NCAA in the 5,000-meters, as he clocked a Pac-12-leading time of 13:41.88 at the Bryan Clay Invitational tonight. Gilbert's time highlighted the first of three busy days for the Husky track team down in Southern California at four different meets.
The Husky senior was seventh in the top section of the 5k, but second among NCAA Division-I competitors, as the heat was won by Olympic medalist Evan Jager. Gilbert's time moves him to No. 5 in the NCAA this outdoor season, and is the fastest in the Pac-12 this year. His time was six seconds off his school record set back in 2016, but only one other Husky in history has bettered Gilbert's 13:41.88 time tonight, and that was David Bazzi's 13:40.61 from 2001.
Sophomore Kaitlyn Neal raced her first 5,000-meters of the year tonight at Azusa as well, and she finished in 16:24.50 which puts her sixth in the Pac-12 at this point.
The other scene for UW today was the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate hosted by Long Beach State, where senior Katie Wardsworth had a season-best throw of the hammer, tossing 174-8 and moving up one spot on the Husky top-10 list to No. 5. Sophomore Angel Nkwonta had a best mark today of 171-9.
Freshman Jonah Wilson had a solid day in the discus, getting a best of 171-9 to finish seventh out of 44 competitors.
The pole vault group got its first of two meets in today. Annika Dayton led the women with a clearance of 12-9 ½ while Tori Franzen made 12-3 ½ and Monica Cohen went 11-9 ¾. On the men's side, Blaise Black and Zach Shugart each cleared a best of 16-1 ¼.
Freshman Jaylen Taylor took fourth in the triple jump at 47-3 ½ and also had a season-best long jump mark of 21-6 ¾.
Tomorrow the Huskies will be found at the Bryan Clay Invitational, the Mt. SAC Relays, as well as the Beach Invitational.
