SEATTLE – Washington returns to action this week in a big way, hitting up four different meets over three days in Southern California. The Mt. SAC Relays is the well-known name on the schedule, but more Dawgs will be competing at the Beach Invitational hosted by Long Beach State while a large group of distance runners will compete at the Bryan Clay Invitational in Azusa, Calif. and yet another group of jumpers and throwers will be at Long Beach State's Pacific Coast Intercollegiate on Thursday.
A total of 27 men and 25 women will be making the trip this week, which starts on Thursday with the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate hosted by Long Beach State. A small group of field event athletes will compete there, including Blaise Black, Zach Shugart, Annika Dayton, and Tori Franzen in the pole vault, Mayson Douglass in the high jump, Angel Nkwonta and Katie Wardsworth in the women's hammer, Jonah Wilson in the discus, and Jaylen Taylor in the long and triple jumps.
Also Thursday, the Bryan Clay Invitational has its first of two days focusing on the longer distance running events. Senior All-American Colby Gilbert and sophomore Kaitlyn Neal will both run the 5,000-meters there on Thursday.
On Friday at Azusa, it will be 1,500-meter mayhem. The women will have Amy-Eloise Neale, Emily Hamlin, Allie Scahdler, Hannah Derby, and Camila David-Smith all running the distance, while the men will have an even bigger group of Andrew Gardner, Fred Huxham, Nate Beamer, Johnathan Stevens in his first race of the year, Nick Laccinole, Julius Diehr, Connor Morello, and Keith Williams. The only Husky breaking the pattern is Devan Kirk who will race his normal 800-meters.
Friday also brings the first UW action at the Mt. SAC Relays, held this year at El Camino College in Torrance, Calif., as well as the Beach Invitational, hosted by Long Beach State once again.
The sprinters and hurdlers will be the main group competing at Mt. SAC. Friday will have the 4x100m relays for the men and women. Women racing on Friday in open events will include Imani Apostol (400m), Carolyn Birkenfeld (400m), Iman Brown (200m), Morganne Hill (100mH/400mH), Darhian Mills (100mH), Olivia Ribera (100m), and Raquel Tjernagel (400m). Jelani Heath will be the one Husky in the field events at Mt. SAC, long jumping.
Saturday at Mt. SAC will have the 4x400m relays as well as 400-meter hurdle races for Mills, Hanna Tarleton, and Carly Lester.
At the two-day Beach Invitational on Friday and Saturday, some Huskies will be seeing their first action of the week while many others will be doubling back or competing in different events than their first appearance.
The event schedule is still being finalized, but potentially competing in the sprints once again are Hill, Lester, Ribera, and Tarleton for the women, and Oscar Herrera, Devan Kirk (400m), Lucas, Mafilas, Simpson, Winfrey, and Christian Young for the men.
