Six Extra-Base Hits Help Huskies To 9-1 Win Over #23 Cal
April 15, 2018 | Softball
SEATTLE – The #1 Washington Huskies completed their fourth consecutive Pac-12 sweep, defeating the #23 California Golden Bears 9-1 in six innings. Washington hit five doubles and a homer in the game, with Sis Bates, Emma Helm, and Nawai Kaupe all driving in multiple runs. The Huskies move to 41-2 on the year and 11-2 in conference, holding a ten-game winning streak in conference play.
Gabbie Plain struck out the first batter of the game en route to her 12th win. The freshman would strike out the first batter in each of the first three innings, picking up 6 Ks in that time. Plain ended the game with 11 strikeouts, allowing only one run to score.
Helm's double gave the Huskies an early lead in the first inning. Kirstyn Thomas and Julia DePonte reached base via an infield single and a walk before Helm's hit made it 1-0. Helm hit a low line drive off the pitcher's leg, which ricocheted into leftfield to allow Thomas to come across.
Bates picked up two RBI in the second inning as the Huskies scored in all but one frame on the day. Amirah Milloy led off the inning with a hustle double, making it to second as her short fly ball dropped in front of the centerfielder. After Kelly Burdick walked and stole second, Bates laced a hot liner to center to score them both and make it 3-0.
The lead only continued to grow on Milloy's second double, as the junior sent the ball past the first baseman before she could react and into foul territory in rightfield. That made it 4-0.
Trysten Melhart came off the bench to leadoff the fifth and made it four innings in a row with a leadoff hit. Melhart single through the legs of the third baseman on a searing line drive, then stole second and third. Burdick brought her home with a single up the middle.
After Cal picked up a run in the sixth, Plain shut them down. The freshman immediately struck out the next batter she faced, stranding two runners and killing any comeback hope.
Helm hit her third home run of the season to put two runs on the board in the sixth. Her blast went out to dead center, scoring Thomas and making it 7-1. Kaupe would end the game with a double to the right-center wall, scoring two more and ending the game by run-rule.
