LAS VEGAS --- Henry Lee posted a final-round 71 to finish tied for seventh overall in medalist play to lead Washington to a tie for 11th at the Southern Highlands Collegiate on Wednesday.
The Huskies had a solid final round score with an even-par 288, moving up three spots in the team standings with a 16-over 880 (293-299-288). Washington opened the round strong and moved as high as 10th through the middle of the round, but gave back five shots over the final three holes to finish 11th.
"We finished tied for 11th in one of the strongest fields in college golf," said Head Coach Alan Murray. "We played a really good last round today which could have been even better and need to build on this moving forward."
Lee continued his impressive performance in Las Vegas with a 1-under 71, moving up three spots on the final day to finish tied for seventh at 214 (72-71-71), just six shots out of the lead. Lee was solid through the middle of the round, carding four birdies over an eight-hole stretch. However, he struggled a bit down the stretch, playing at 3-over over the final five holes.
"Henry played a fantastic tournament and had a bit of a tough finish today which shouldn't take the gloss off a fantastic tournament for him," said Murray.
Carl Yuan wrapped up the tournament with back-to-back 71s to put him in a tie for 28th at 3-over 219 (77-71-71).
"Henry shot 71 today along with Carl which were very solid rounds of golf on that course," said Murray. "Carl recovered well after a tough first round to finish 28th."
Noah Woolsey came back from a frustrating second round with a 2-over 74 on the final day, finishing the tournament tied for 20th at 218 (67-77-74). Woolsey recorded pars on each of the first 15 holes of the day before bogeys on 16 and 17 left him at 2-over for the day. Woolsey's opening-round 67 was the second-lowest round of the tournament.
"Noah played much better than his score and had a couple of bogeys coming in that didn't reflect his play this week," said Murray. "Noah finished tied for 20th and just keeps making progress every tournament."
Frank Garber ended the tournament on a positive note, carding an even-par 72 to finish the tournament at 233 (81-80-72). Garber closed out his round by recording three birdies over the final five holes. Jan Schneider also ended on the upswing, posting a three-over 75 to tie Garber with a 233 (77-81-75).
"Frank played a clutch back 9 to shoot a really gritty even par round and help the team," said Murray. "Jan finished with a 75 and showed some really encouraging signs for the future."
Washington takes its longest trip of the season, heading to Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida (just outside of Jacksonville) to compete in The Hayt hosted by the University of North Florida at the Sawgrass Country Club. The trip will take the Huskies 2,470 miles each way. The tournament begins with 36 holes on Sunday, March 18, then concludes with one round on Monday, March 19.
