Huskies Head to North Florida for The Hayt Invitational
March 16, 2018 | Men's Golf
PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. --- The University of Washington's men's golf team embarks on its longest trip of the season, traveling 2,470 miles to North Florida for the John Hayt Collegiate Invitational on Sunday and Monday. The tournament takes place at the Sawgrass Country Club, a Par 72 course which plays at 6,966 yards. The 54-hole tournament is hosted by the University of North Florida located in nearby Jacksonville and will see a pair of rounds on Sunday before concluding with 18 holes on Monday. Washington is paired with Tennessee and North Carolina to begin at approximately 8:30 am Sunday morning.
THE FIELD (GolfWeek Rankings): Auburn (6), Central Florida (48), Coastal Carolina (88), Furman, Jacksonville (63), Liberty (51), Lipscomb (65), Louisville (39), North Carolina (22), North Florida (26), North Texas (53), Purdue (47), Tennessee (44), Washington (77), West Virginia (92).
THE LINEUP: The Huskies will go with the same lineup in their last competition with junior Carl Yuan at No. 1, freshman Noah Woolsey at No. 2, sophomore Henry Lee at No. 3, senior Frank Garber at No. 4 and freshman Jan Schneider rounding out the group at No. 5.
COACH'S THOUGHTS: "Sawgrass Country Club is a really challenging golf course and we will be playing on Bermuda grass which we don't see a whole lot of," Head Coach Alan Murray said. "It is a great test for our guys and a good test to see how versatile our games are."
"The ability to control your ball flight and put it in play from the tee are the two main areas that will be critical to scoring, outside of being good on and around the greens, which is required every week to be a top player."
"We showed some really good signs in the last tournament where Henry and Noah especially played really well."
"We are at a critical point in our season where we really need to start performing well or NCAAs will not be a reality for us. Our guys are certainly capable of winning this tournament but it is won on the golf course and that's where we need to do our talking: with our clubs! Excited to get down to the warmth and get the tournament underway!"
LAST TIME OUT: Henry Lee posted a final-round 71 to finish tied for seventh overall in medalist play to lead Washington to a tie for 11th at the Southern Highlands Collegiate.
The Huskies had a solid final round score with an even-par 288, moving up three spots in the team standings with a 16-over 880 (293-299-288). Washington opened the round strong and moved as high as 10th through the middle of the round, but gave back five shots over the final three holes to finish 11th.
Lee continued his impressive performance in Las Vegas with a 1-under 71, moving up three spots on the final day to finish tied for seventh at 214 (72-71-71), just six shots out of the lead. Lee was solid through the middle of the round, carding four birdies over an eight-hole stretch. However, he struggled a bit down the stretch, playing at 3-over over the final five holes.
FALL SEASON: Washington had to fight through weather issues through the first two tournaments, seeing its first tournament in South Carolina cancelled and its second tournament in Ohio shortened due to rain. The Huskies finished in the top five twice, posting a fifth-place finish at the Inverness Intercollegiate and taking second at the William H. Tucker Invitational in New Mexico. UW had a busy month of October, closing out the fall with 12th place finishes at the Nike Collegiate Invitational and the Alister Mackenzie before posting a 10th place finish at the Warrior Wave Invitational.
