March 06, 2018 | Men's Tennis
SEATTLE – Washington men's tennis will begin Pac-12 play this weekend with home matches against No. 13 USC and No. 4 UCLA on Friday and Sunday, respectively.
The Huskies are 8-5 heading into conference. In the latest ITA rankings, Mitch Stewart and Jake Douglas are still ranked in singles at No. 73 and No. 86, respectively. Last season, the Dawgs went to California for these matches, falling in both. Against both UCLA and USC, Washington has a total of seven wins all-time, two against the Bruins and five against the Trojans. This is the second trip to Seattle for USC and UCLA. They both participated in the ITA Men's National Team Indoor Championship that was hosted by Washington back in mid-February.
The Trojans (8-3) went 2-1 in the indoor championship. They won their first-round match against Oklahoma State and then fell to No. 1 Wake Forest, who eventually won the tournament. They capped off the weekend with a win over Georgia. In 2017, USC made it to the round of 16 at the NCAA championships. The Trojans have two ranked in singles, No. 12 Brandon Holt and No. 64 Daniel Cukierman, and two in doubles at No. 26 and No. 52.
UCLA (13-2) was the runner-up at the indoor championship, falling to Wake Forest in the championship match. The Bruins are coming off of a Pac-12 regular-season title in 2017. They went a perfect 6-0 last season. In the 2017 NCAA championships, UCLA made it to the quarterfinals, but like USC, fell to Georgia. The Bruins have one doubles pair ranked at No. 24 and four ranked in singles, No. 3 Martin Redlicki, No. 58 Keegan Smith, No. 62 Logan Staggs and No. 117 Evan Zhu.
Friday's match against USC will begin at 5 p.m. PT while Sunday's will start at 1 p.m. PT. Links for live streaming and scoring can be found on the men's tennis schedule page. With weather permitting, the Huskies will host the matches at the Quillian Tennis Stadium. If the weather conditions are not suitable for tennis, the matches will be held in the Nordstrom Tennis Center.
