LAS VEGAS – Despite another strong showing on the back nine, the Washington men's golf team gave back 11 strokes and finished the second round with a 299 to sit 14th at 16-over 592 at the Southern Highlands Collegiate on Tuesday.
For the second straight day, the scores were higher at the opening of the day than near the end as the Huskies were 14-over-par on the front nine but just 3-over after making the turn.
Noah Woolsey, who held the lead after the first day, struggled on day two, finishing the second round with a 5-over 77. The freshman is at even-par for the tournament and is tied for 12th overall at 144.
"Noah had a tough day today," said Head Coach Alan Murray. "He got off to a tough start and just swam against the tide. He battled hard but just had one of those days."
The Huskies received low scores from junior Carl Yuan and sophomore Henry Lee, who each carded rounds of 1-under-par. Yuan played a consistent round after struggling on Monday, posting three birdies, two bogeys and 13 pars. He is at 4-over 148 (77-71) for the tournament, tied for 41st overall.
Lee had a rough front nine, but came back with three birdies to one bogey for a to drop two strokes on
the back nine. He currently is the Huskies low tournament score with a 1-under 143 (72-71) after an even par opening round and is tied for 10th overall.
"Carl played well and Henry putted extremely well and put together a nice round," said Murray. "Henry is maturing as a player and we are pleased to see he is reaping the rewards of his hard work."
Frank Garber and Jan Schneider each had rough starts but rallied on the back nine, each posting a 2-over 38 over the final nine holes. Schneider posted a 9-over 81 and is at 158 (77-81) through two rounds while Garber carded an 8-over 80 and is at 161 (81-80) overall.
"Frank and Jan struggled a little and this course can be unforgiving if you miss in the wrong spots," said Murray.
"We have some ground to try and make up tomorrow and we are looking forward to getting back out there," said Murray.
The Huskies wrap up the tournament on Wednesday, paired with Texas Tech and UCF on the 10th hole at 10:00 a.m.
