GymDawgs Set Season High With 197.075 At Southern Utah
March 04, 2018 | Gymnastics
SEATTLE – The #11 Washington GymDawgs went over 197 and set a new season-high team score once again, earning a win over Southern Utah with their score of 197.075. That makes it three times in the last four weeks that Washington has gone over 197, setting a new season high every time.
"I want to celebrate this team for scoring their third 197 this season, something we didn't do last year. I'm extremely proud of them," said head coach Elise Ray-Statz. "There is still a lot to be done to clean up and fine-tune our competitions. We will continue to work hard to get better in the gym and iron out these details as we close out the regular season and quickly approach postseason competition."
The GymDawgs won three of the four individual event titles en route to the win. Monica Riley set a new career high with her score of 9.925 on bars, earning her the event title. Madison Copiak came close behind with her score of 9.900, one of four GymDawg scores of 9.900 or greater in the meet.
Riley had made it her goal to set a career high in the event and did so with her impressive routine. "This week, Elise had talked to us about trying to embody what we wanted to do at the meet," said Riley. "In practice, I was just going for the handstands and trying to spot the dismount and all those little details so it was nice to see it show up in the meet."
Malory Rose and Evanni Roberson tied for the event title on beam, with each putting up scores of 9.900. Maya Washington won the floor title with her score of 9.900, with Michaela Nelson and Kristyn Hoffa taking second with their scores of 9.875.
Roberson's beam performance helped her to a second-place finish in the all-around. Roberson had score of 39.350, just off her career high set at Arizona State earlier this year.
The GymDawgs wore special grips and bands during the meet to bring awareness to victims of sexual assault, standing in solidarity with all those affected by it. "Sexual assault awareness must be a continuing conversation to empower the victims who have spoken and encourage those who haven't yet found their voice," said Ray-Statz. "Through the voices of these brave individuals, we can only hope that this is the beginning of the end of such horrifying violence."
