GymDawgs Tie Team Record With Fourth 197 Of Season
March 10, 2018 | Gymnastics
SEATTLE – The No. 9-ranked Washington GymDawgs scored their highest total of the year with a score of 197.400 Friday night in a win over UC Davis and Seattle Pacific. It was the fourth time this season that Washington has recorded a team score of 197 or higher, tying the school record for most team scores of 197 or higher. That record was accomplished twice before, in both 2003 and 2004.
"We had so much fun on Friday night," said head coach Elise Ray-Statz. "The team has been focusing in on fine-tuning in the gym and bringing that into our competition. Our last couple meets were a little soft, so to see the team step back up was exciting. Their work and focus really paid off on Friday night and they are motivated to improve even more."
Senior Hailey Burleson, the only UW gymnast to compete in the all-around Friday, won it with a score of 39.600, a new career-high. She also won the floor competition, tied for first in both vault and beam, and was second on bars.
The GymDawgs scored team season-highs on three events, setting new highs on vault (49.150), beam (49.475), and floor (49.450). The GymDawgs had three different competitors record scores of 9.900 or higher on each of bars, beam, and floor, led by Monica Riley's career-best score of 9.950 on bars.
Event Recaps
Vault, 49.150 – Washington began the meet with a terrific performance on vault, netting the Huskies' top team vault score of the season. Two gymnasts – Kristyn Hoffa (9.850) and Madison Copiak (9.825) – tied their career highs, while Joslyn Goings' score of 9.825 tied a season high to take third place in the meet. Hoffa and Burleson tied for top spot on the vault, each with a score of 9.850.
Bars, 49.325 – After the impressive start on bars, the GymDawgs continued their outstanding night with their second-highest team bars score of the year, just behind the 49.375 that they scored last week at Southern Utah. Three UW gymnasts set new career highs. Monica Riley won the event with a score of 9.950, bettering her previous high of 9.925, while Evanni Roberson and Hailey Burleson each set new career bests with scores of 9.900, tying for second place in the bars competition.
Beam, 49.475 – Washington's beam rotation was also a season-high, edging the 49.425 the GymDawgs scored two meets ago against Stanford. Evanni Roberson tied her career high and Burleson set a season high to tie for the top spot in the meet with scores of 9.925. Joslyn Goings also posted a season high with a score 9.900, good for third overall.
Floor, 49.450 – Several more season and career highs fell on the floor exercise, as did the team score benchmark. UW's score of 49.450 smashed the previous season high of 49.375, set against both Oregon State and Arizona State. Hoffa set a new season high and tied her career best with a score of 9.900. Moments later, Maya Washington also scored a 9.900, tying her best-ever. Those two tied for second place in the floor competition while Burleson wrapped up her night with a season-high score of 9.925 on floor, her third first-place finish of the night in the four individual event competitions.
