Huskies Seventh After Solid First-Round at The Goodwin
March 29, 2018 | Men's Golf
SAN FRANCISCO – The Washington men's golf team got off to a hot start, posting a 1-under 283 to open The Goodwin, matching its fourth-lowest round of the year and placing tied for seventh among 26 teams after one round of the tournament held at TPC Harding Park in San Francisco on Thursday.
The Huskies were the first team to tee off on Thursday, finishing their round before half of the field began its day. Despite playing in cooler conditions, Washington got off to a fast start and was tied for the lead after the first wave of teams finished. At the end of the day, UW sits six shots behind Stanford for the lead and is tied with three teams at one-under.
Freshman Noah Woolsey led the way for the Huskies, sitting tied for sixth overall with a 3-under 68 in the first round. Woolsey, who matched the team-high with his fifth round in the 60s, had a strong front nine. He opened the day with a birdie, then carded an eagle on the ninth to go 4-under through nine holes. Woolsey had a pair of bogeys early on the back nine, but birdied 17 to finish at 3-under.
Junior Carl Yuan finished at even-par 71 with three birdies and three bogeys on the day. Yuan currently sits tied for 26th with his round of 71.
Sophomore Henry Lee and freshman Jan Schneider each carded rounds of 72, tying for 45th overall at 1-over par. Lee had a strong day with the exception of one bad hole. After going 1-under through 11, he tripled 12. He would finish with two birdies and a bogey for the 72. Schneider had just five holes at even par on the day, posting six birdies and seven bogeys overall. Four of those birdies came on the back nine as he went 1-under over the final nine holes.
Senior Frank Garber rounded out the counting five for the Huskies, posting a 5-over 76. Garber got off to a tough start with a bogey on one and double on three. However, he settled down and posted 13 pars over the next 15 holes with just two bogeys to wrap up the day.
Sophomore Shamu Bodhidatta played as an individual and carded a 4-over 75, teeing off nearly six hours after the rest of his team. Bodhidatta had six bogeys and two birdies including one on 17 to finish at 4-over for the day.
Washington returns to the course on Friday with an afternoon tee time, again paired with UC Davis and Wyoming for a 12:25 start. The tournament concludes on Saturday.
