TEMPE, Arizona – The 16th ranked University of Washington women's golf team sits in second place heading into Sunday's final round at the PING/ASU Invitational after carding a 1-over 289 during Saturday's 18 holes. Overall, the Huskies are 4-under 572 (284-288), which is three strokes off the lead, held 17th-ranked Oklahoma State (7-under 569).
"I was so proud of the effort again today in what was some tough conditions as it was very windy and the pace of play was slow," said head coach Mary Lou Mulflur. "The team showed a tremendous amount of resilience and after posting some big numbers they bounced back. We had to count two doubles and a quad and to finish with the score we did makes it a very impressive showing."
Washington's juniors led the charge on Saturday, with Wenyung Keh climbing 21 spots up the leaderboard into a tie for second thanks to her round of 5-under 67, which tied the lowest round of the tournament in the 81-player field. It is also Keh's fifth sub-70 round of her career at UW. She opened the day with a force, making birdie on six of the first nine holes, including a span of four-straight.
Despite two errors on the back nine, Keh still put together three birdies and even par on seven of the nine en route to her 5-under finish. She's currently one stroke off the lead with her total score of 4-under 140 (73-67).
"I'm extremely happy for Wenyung, she has been due for a breakout round and she got that today," added Mulflur.
She was followed by freshman Rino Sasaki and junior Sarah Rhee who are each tied for sixth at 3-under 141. Sasaki continued her under-par play on Saturday as she knocked in a 2-under 70 following her day one score 1-under 71. She's one of three players in the event to stay under par in both rounds. Saturday's scorecard for Sasaki featured five birdies, four on the front nine, and despite three blemishes, she finished at 2-under.
Rhee started her day with birdies on three of her first five holes but went 3-over during the next 13 to end the day at 1-over 73. She is also tied for sixth at 3-under 141 (68-73) and sits just two strokes off the lead.
Finishing next for the Dawgs was junior Julianne Alvarez who is tied for 40th at 6-over 150 (72-78) and she was followed by sophomore Karen Miyamoto who is in 78th with a 17-over 161 (78-83).
The final round of the three-day event starts on Sunday at 9 a.m. and the Dawgs will be paired with Oklahoma State and TCU.
