TEMPE, Arizona – The 16th ranked University of Washington women's golf team earned its second top two finish in three events as it placed second at the PING/ASU Invitational thanks to three of its student-athletes finishing in the top eight overall. UW posted an 8-over 856 (284-288-284) during the three-round, three-day event hosted by Arizona State.
"Again, the effort today from our group was something we were proud of," said head coach Mary Lou Mulflur. "Hats off to (team champion) Arizona, they played extremely well. For us to have three players finish in the top eight in a great field speaks to the balance of our lineup. It was a great response to our last event and I'm extremely proud of Karen for battling through and posting an even par today."
Washington led the field with 56 total birdies and earned its sixth top five showing of the year. Arizona, who is ranked 15th, won the team title with a 12-under 852 while Georgia's Jillian Hollis took home the individual title at 9-under 207.
The Huskies were led by junior Wenyung Keh who continued her streak of not finishing out side of the top 25 this season as she recorded a tie for second at 6-under 210 (73-67-70). She's now posted 10 top 10 efforts in her career and six top five showings. Keh, who tied the tournament low round on Saturday, followed that with a 2-under 70 to close the event. She led the 81-player field with 15 total birdies, four of which came on Sunday.
Closely behind her was junior Sarah Rhee, who jumped one spot on the leaderboard over the final 18 holes to finish in fifth overall at 5-under 211 (68-73-70). She also closed the tournament with a 2-under 70 for her sixth top 10 career showing. Her three birdies on the back nine vaulted her into her fifth-place showing.
Freshman Rino Sasaki was another top finisher for UW as she placed tied for sixth at 3-under 213 (71-70-72). She didn't't score above even par in any round for the first time of her career at UW and carded 11 birdies during the three days.
Junior Julianne Alvarez tied for 48th with her 10-over 226 (72-78-76) while sophomore Karen Miyamoto climbed 12 spots on Sunday into a tie for 66th at 17-over 233 (78-83-72). She saved her best round for last as she posted even par following her first two rounds where she entered the day at 17-over.
Up next for the Dawgs is the Buckeye Invitational in Columbus Ohio, April 14-15 prior to hosting the Pac-12 Championships, April 22-24 at Broadmoor Golf Club in Seattle.
