March 23, 2018 | Women's Golf
TEMPE, Az.– The 16th ranked University of Washington women's golf team started off strong in the first round at the PING/ASU Invitational on Friday as it currently leads the 14-team field with a 4-under 284. The Huskies had all four counting scores in the top 25 and were led by junior Sarah Rhee who is tied for second.
"We had a really solid effort today in the first round," said head coach Mary Lou Mulflur. "I was very proud of how the team handled the windy conditions. They were much better than last week. It was great to see Sarah (Rhee) have the round that she did, she was overdue for that outcome based on the effort she has been putting in. I would say the same goes for Julianne (Alvarez). They have both been working hard on their mental game so it was good to see it pay off. The entire team has been dedicated to working hard on the mental fine tuning and to see how that played out today was impressive."
Rhee is tied for second after notching six birdies and just two bogeys in her first round of the event f0r a 4-under 68. She finished strong after a bogey on hole 13 put her at 1-under by responding with three birdies on her next five holes. The junior is just one stroke off the lead held by Arizona's Bianca Pagdanganan (5-under 67).
Closely behind her was freshman Rino Sasaki, who is tied for ninth at 1-under 71. Her round started clean through 12 holes including one birdie before two blemishes on holes 13 and 14. She bounced back with birdies on the par four 15th and the par five 17th to end the day under par.
Junior Julianne Alvarez is tied for 14th following an even par round of 72. After making the turn at even par, completely clean on her first nine, Alvarez posted birdies on the 10th and 11th holes. Despite a few errors on holes 12, 14 and 16, she knocked in birdies on 15 and 18 to finish at even par.
Fellow junior Wenyung Keh sits tied for 23rd at 1-over 73. Her three birdies put her in position to continue her streak of six-straight top 25 finishes this season. Rounding out the Washington squad was sophomore Karen Miyamoto who is in a tie for 56th at 6-over 78.
Washington continues play in the three-day, 54-hole event at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday and will be paired with Georgia and Arizona.
