PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. --- Junior Carl Yuan finished tied for eighth overall to lead the University of Washington men's golf team to an eighth-place finish at the The John Hayt Collegiate Invitational concluded Monday at Sawgrass Country Club in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida.
The Huskies struggled a bit as a team on Monday, dropping two spots posting a 10-over-par 298 to finish at 12-over 876 (293-285-298). Washington was tied for eighth with Louisville while Auburn held on to win by one shot over North Carolina.
"Overall we finished poorly today and moved back a couple of spots which was disappointing," said head coach Alan Murray. "We showed some good signs this week and can be encouraged by that but made too many costly errors in the end."
Yuan finished up the tournament with a 3-under 213 (71-69-73), placing tied for eighth in medalist play. The junior started the round with a birdie and was at one-under before a tough double-bogey on his 16th hole of the day. He would finish at 2-over 73.
"It was a great tournament by Carl finishing tied for eighth overall," said Murray. "He continues his solid play this season."
Sophomore Henry Lee posted a final-round 75 and finished at even-par 216 (71-70-75) for the tournament—tied for 16th overall. Lee started out his round with a birdie on his fourth hole of the day, but had four bogeys the rest of the way and finished with a 3-over 75.
"Henry continued his solid play with a t-16th place finish," said Murray. "Both Carl and Henry had a bad finish to the round which hurts them a little as they could have had really solid days."
Noah Woolsey had a solid round going until a bad hole on the back nine and finished with a 5-over 77 to give him a score of 221 (72-72-77) for the tournament, which at 5-over was tied for 35th. Woolsey was 2-under as he made the turn and even heading into his 13th hole. But he wound up with an eight on the hole and would wind up at 5-over.
"Noah was disappointed with his round," said Murray. "A couple of costly holes caused his good round to fall apart."
Jan Schneider recovered from a few bad rounds, posting a 1-over 73 to finish on a strong note. Schneider alternated birdies and bogeys on the day, carding three birdies to four bogeys and finished at 23-over 239 (79-87-73).
"Jan played a really solid round of 73," said Murray. "I was really proud how he bounced back after a tough day yesterday."
Frank Garber had a rough morning, posting a final-round 82, finishing at 20-over 236 (80-74-82).
"Frank had a tough day again today and it just wasn't his week," said Murray.
The Huskies have a short break before returning to action March 29-31, traveling to Palo Alto for The Goodwin hosted by Stanford at TPC Harding Park.
