Gilbert Reaches Podium Once Again In NCAA 3k
March 10, 2018 | Track & Field
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Senior Colby Gilbert found himself in familiar position today at the NCAA Indoor Championships, fighting for a win with a lap to go in the 3,000-meters for the third-straight year. Gilbert, the Vancouver, Wash. native and Husky school record-holder, would settle for seventh in the end, earning the eighth All-America honor of his career. Amy-Eloise Neale also finished 12th today in the women's 3k as the indoor track season came to a close.
Gilbert ran a savvy race befitting a senior as the early pace was slow and the pack remained very bunched up for most of the race. Gilbert maneuvered himself out of trouble several times, eventually moving up into the top-five with 600-meters to go and hitting the bell lap in fourth-place. Gilbert was going hard but lost a couple spots right towards the finish, coming across in seventh-place in 8:07.26, less than a second out of fourth-place.
The First Team All-America honor for Gilbert is the fourth of his career, to go with three All-America Second Team honors and one All-America honor in cross country for a total of eight.
Neale ran the 3,000-meters for the first time at NCAA Indoors today. She had been in the top-10 at her past five NCAA Championship meets counting cross country, indoors, and outdoors, but she couldn't quite extend that streak today. Neale was off the pack for most of the race and picked off a few runners late to place 12th in the field of 15 with a time of 9:20.24. It is the sixth All-America honor for Neale.
Gilbert's two points with his seventh-place finish gave the UW men's team a tie for 56th-place overall.
Washington now looks towards the outdoor season, starting later this month with the Trojan Invitational in Los Angeles.
