Dawgs Down Aggies, 6-1
February 09, 2018 | Men's Tennis
SEATTLE – Highlighted by the first appearance of the season by freshman Alexis Alvarez, Washington men's tennis took down UC Davis, 6-1, on Friday night at the Nordstrom Tennis Center.
"I'm happy about the win today," Washington head coach Matt Anger said. "I think we could've been a little sharper during doubles. Even though we started singles strong, once we were about halfway through, we had a lull."
Washington improves to 5-1 on the year, while UC Davis drops to 2-5.
All three doubles sets were competitive. The No. 3 doubles duo of Alexis Alvarez and Amit Batta handled their court well, taking the set 6-3. This was the first dual-match appearance by the freshman Alvarez.
"I was thrilled for Alexis," Anger said. "He has been playing just as well as other guys on the team, patiently waiting for his opportunity. He gets along so well with the guys. They were all fired up for him."
After Kawika Lam and Enzo Sommer dropped their tight set, 7-5, the doubles point was in the hands of the No. 2 doubles duo of Jack Davis and Jake Douglas. The Huskies were up 5-4 with the opportunity to clinch the point, but the Aggies duo tied it up. The set went to a tiebreaker, which saw the Dawgs get down early. However, they battled back to win the tiebreaker, 7-5, to seal the doubles point.
The Dawgs dominated singles play, winning all of the opening sets. No Aggies player got closer than two games in those first-set scores.
Sommer moved up to No. 2 singles for the day, cruising to a 6-1 victory in the first set. His second set saw more competition, but he still led the whole way to a 6-3 win for the first singles point of the night. Piers Foley was not far behind on court four, rolling to a 6-4, 6-0 match win.
Following his intense doubles match, Davis took his first set, 6-2. The start of his second set was closer with the two trading games. He got behind 4-2 and was unable to come back, dropping the set 6-4. In the third-set tiebreaker, Davis won 10-4 to take the match.
At No. 1 singles, No. 48 Douglas saw little trouble. Following his 6-3 win in the first set, he won the second set, 6-4. Sebastian Hawken also won his match in two sets on court six, 6-4, 6-4.
After Batta took the first set, 6-3, he played from behind in the second set, down 4-2, ultimately falling 6-2. He lost the tiebreaker, 10-8, to drop the match.
The Dawgs host another match on Sunday morning against Wisconsin at 10 a.m. PT.
