Strong Singles Results In Win For Huskies
February 11, 2018 | Men's Tennis
SEATTLE – Washington men's tennis battled back after dropping the doubles point to defeat Wisconsin, 5-2, on Sunday morning at the Nordstrom Tennis Center.
"I'm very happy with the win," Washington head coach Matt Anger said. "I look across and see how hard their guys fight, and for us to come out on the right side of things was good. It was not an easy day. We had a rough start in doubles, and a rough start in singles even though you might not be able to tell based on the scores."
The Badgers (4-4) won the doubles point after picking up wins at No. 2 and 3 doubles to get an early lead on the Huskies (6-1). After the No. 2 doubles of Jack Davis and Jake Douglas fell, 6-0, Enzo Sommer and Kawika Lam earned a win on court one, 6-2.
The deciding set was at No. 2 doubles. Piers Foley and Mitch Stewart battled back and forth with the Wisconsin pair, trading games and leads. The Dawgs held serve to force a tiebreaker, but the Badgers came away with the win, 7-6(5).
Courts one and three were strong in singles. Sommer at No. 3 singles handled his match well, winning in two sets, 6-4, 6-1. No. 48 Douglas was not far behind, taking his match, 6-3, 6-4.
Foley was down 4-1 in the first set before mounting a comeback. He fought to win the opening set, 7-5. The second set was tighter throughout. After being tied at 3-3, Foley pushed ahead, taking the set, 6-4, to win the match.
Stewart went back and forth with his Badgers foe in their first set. He eventually won the set at 7-5. The second set started more in favor of the senior, going up 4-1. The Badgers' Josef Dodridge won one more game before Stewart finished it off, winning 6-2 to clinch the team win for Washington.
Coming into the match at No. 6 singles, Sebastian Hawken came out strong, winning his first set, 6-4. However, he got into a rut in the second set, letting Wisconsin's Jesper Freimuth win, 6-1, to go to a third set. Hawken would go on to win the third set, 6-3, to take the match.
At No. 4 singles, Amit Batta struggled. He dropped the match, 6-1, 6-4.
Next weekend, Washington hosts the ITA National Team Indoor Championship. Check back on GoHuskies.com for more information regarding the tournament.
