Doubles Play Pushes Dawgs To 5-2 Win Over Tigers
February 03, 2018 | Men's Tennis
SEATTLE – Strong doubles play started Washington men's tennis on the right foot to take the 5-2 win against Princeton on Saturday afternoon at the Nordstrom Tennis Center.
"Overall it was a good weekend for us," Washington head coach Matt Anger said. "Being able to defeat Pepperdine and then Princeton today was great. A couple of our guys did struggle today, but when I step back and look at the big picture, our doubles keep getting better and I think we are getting more and more solid throughout the lineup. Everything is heading in the right direction, but we still have some things to clean up."
Washington improves to 4-1 while Princeton drops to 2-2 on the year. The Huskies swept the Tigers in doubles and won four of the six singles points.
No. 1 doubles finished quickly with Enzo Sommer and Kawika Lam sweeping their opponents, 6-0. Jake Douglas and Jack Davis picked up a win at No. 2 doubles as well, 6-2, capped off with an ace from the senior captain Douglas.
Mitch Stewart and Piers Foley took an early two-game lead in their doubles set, but the Tigers won three-straight to go up 5-4. UW fought off five match points to tie it at 6-6 and force a tiebreaker. The Dawgs took the tiebreaker, 7-3, and the set to complete the doubles sweep for Washington.
Stewart took care of business in his first set on court one, winning 6-2. In the second set, he was rolled to a quick 6-0 win. At No. 2, Douglas controlled his match as well. His first set was more competitive, seeing Douglas win just 6-4. He then handled the second set quickly, 6-1.
Batta battled back from being down three games to tie it up at 4-4. He won three-straight games after going down by one to win the first set, 7-5. His second set saw a more dominant performance, taking it 6-2. His singles point clinched the match for the Huskies.
The freshman Davis moved up a spot to No. 5 singles against Princeton. After winning the first few games, the Tigers' Davey Roberts challenged him. They went to tiebreakers, which Roberts won, 7-3. Davis dropped the second set as well, 6-3. This was his first loss in dual-match singles.
At No. 3 singles, Sommer struggled in the opening set, falling 6-1. He turned it around in set two, winning the first four games. However, Princeton's Kial Kaiser fought to tie it at 5-5. Sommer won two games at deuce to take the set, 7-5, and go to a third. Kaiser got a good jump in the final set and did not look back, claiming the set, 6-2, and the match.
Sebastian Hawken made his 2018 debut in singles on court six. After trading games with his opponent, Princeton's Diego Vives took control, winning 6-3. In the second set, Hawken had command, taking it 6-4 to move to a third. The final set was a battle, but Hawken came out on top in tiebreakers, 7-6(3), to take his first singles win.
The Huskies are still home next weekend, hosting matches on Friday and Sunday against UC Davis and Wisconsin, respectively.
