GymDawgs Off To Southern Utah On Last Regular Season Road Trip
February 27, 2018 | Gymnastics
SEATTLE – Now ranked #11 in the nation, the GymDawgs will head to Utah this week to take on the #28 Southern Utah Thunderbirds. Washington will look to continue its impressive season that has seen the GymDawgs record two team scores over 197 in the last three weeks.
Washington defeated the #22 Stanford Cardinal at home last week, setting a new season-high team score on beam of 49.425 in the process. Three GymDawgs went over 9.900 on beam in that competition: Hailey Burleson and Joslyn Goings each put up scores of 9.900 to take second place while Evanni Roberson won the event title with her career-high score of 9.925. Washington moved into the top ten in the nation on beam with that performance.
The GymDawgs are also in the top ten on floor with an average score of 49.240. Four GymDawgs went over 9.800 against Stanford, led by Burleson's event-winning score of 9.875. It was the seventh consecutive week that the GymDawgs have had a floor score of 49.000, helped along by Maya Washington and Zoey Schaefer each recording scores of 9.850.
Burleson would end the Stanford meet with an all-around score of 39.350. The senior is now 13th in the nation in all-around, averaging a score of 39.360. Over the last five weeks, Burleson has had just two scores under 9.800 while going over 9.900 five times. That includes three consecutive weeks over 9.900 on beam.
Southern Utah has gone over a team score of 196 twice this year and has average a score of 195.331 when at home. The Thunderbirds are 21st in the nation in vault and 22nd in the nation on floor. Autumn Jorgensen leads the team on floor with her 19th-ranked average score of 9.885: that is the highest individual rank for any member of Southern Utah. The team is also in the top 30 on bars.
This will be the last regular season road competition of the season for the GymDawgs. Washington will return home for two more meets before the Pac-12 Championships on March 24. Washington will host UC Davis and Seattle Pacific on Friday, March 9, then wrap up the regular season with Senior Night on Thursday, March 15 against Boise State and BYU. Tickets for all home meets are available online.
