Huskies Take Down Wisconsin, 4-1
February 25, 2018 | Softball
CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – No. 1 Washington softball kicked off the first game of its doubleheader with a 4-1 win over Wisconsin in the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic on Sunday morning.
The Huskies improve to 17-0 on the year while Wisconsin falls to 7-7. Gabbie Plain picked up the win in the circle, improving her record to 5-0. Samantha Manti came in and pitched 4.0 innings in relief.
Before the Washington offense got warmed up, the defense made some spectacular plays. Julia DePonte made a great catch behind her head in left field to end the first inning. In center field, Kelly Burdick jumped up and caught a rocket for the first out of the bottom of the second.
The third inning saw the Huskies get on the board. Trysten Melhart led off with an infield single and was moved to second after a sacrifice bunt from Rachel Ogasawara. Another bunt, this time a single from Burdick, got Melhart to third base for Van Zee's at bat. The senior third baseman hit a grounder to second and got thrown out, but that gave Melhart time to sprint home, putting the Dawgs up 1-0.
The defense continued to shine. In the bottom of the third, Sis Bates, Nawai Kaupe and Kirstyn Thomas turned a double play to keep the Badgers away from scoring position.
Washington brought two more runs home in the top of the fourth. With the bases loaded, Emma Helm came in to pinch hit. She hit a grounder to the second baseman, who tossed an errant throw to first, not only allowing Helm to be safe but also giving two Huskies the chance to make it home safe. After four innings, the Dawgs led 3-0.
In the top of the sixth, freshman Kaupe hit a home run over right center to push the lead to 4-0. It was her second homer of the year.
The Huskies had the lead going into the bottom of the seventh, but the Badgers were not going away. Wisconsin led off with a double and followed that up with a single to put runners on first and third. One run was allowed, but Washington still pulled out the win, taking it 4-1.
