February 25, 2018 | Softball
CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – Taran Alvelo gave up just one hit and threw 10 strikeouts in No. 1 Washington softball's 4-0 shutout win over Long Beach State in the last game of the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic on Sunday.
The Huskies keep the undefeated season rolling, improving to 18-0 with their 11th shutout. This was also the 10th game this year with multiple home runs for the Dawgs. Long Beach State dropped to 12-2 in 2018.
In six of Alvelo's nine appearances this season, she has tossed double-digit strikeouts. She improved her record to 9-0. On offense, Kirstyn Thomas and Nawai Kaupe led the team. Thomas went 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI, while the freshman Kaupe hit 2-for-4 with one run and two RBI.
Fresh from the win over Wisconsin, the offense got to work right from the start. In the top of the first, the Huskies brought two runs home. Doubles from Sis Bates and Thomas put them both in scoring position. Emma Helm grounded out to the second baseman, but that gave time for Bates to make it home safe. It the next at bat, Kaupe singled past the infield to left field, bringing in Thomas to make it a 2-0 lead.
After a quiet second inning, the bombs started flying in the top of the third. Both Thomas and Kaupe hit solo home runs in the frame to push the lead to 4-0. For Thomas, this was her 10th homer of the year, which ties her with one other (Kristen Rivera) to be the fastest Husky to hit 10 home runs in the first 18 games. For Kaupe, it was her second home run of the day after hitting one out of the park against Wisconsin.
The defense held strong throughout the game. Long Beach's first baserunner did not come until the bottom of the fourth, but Alvelo struck out two to end the inning. She threw two more strikeouts to end the fifth inning as well.
The Dawgs got hits and put runners in scoring position in the last few innings, but they were left stranded. There were four left on base in the sixth and seventh innings.
In the bottom of the seventh, the 49ers' lead-off batter got the first hit for her team, breaking up Alvelo's no-hitter. She responded to the hit by striking out the next three batters, sealing the 4-0 win.
Next weekend, Washington is in Seattle for the Husky Classic from March 2-4.
