February 20, 2018 | Men's Golf
LA QUINTA, Calif. --- Washington's men's golf team opened The Prestige tournament in 15th place after the first round on Tuesday at the Greg Norman course at PGA West.
The Huskies finished the opening round at 21-over-par 305 through 18 holes.
Henry Lee was the Huskies' top finisher, carding a 3-over-par 74 and sitting it a tie for 34th overall. Lee opened his round with a birdie and was one-over at the turn. But after a double bogey and bogey on 11 and 12, he rounded with a birdie on 17 to finish at three-over.
Carl Yuan had a rough back nine, finishing at 4-over 75. Yuan had three birdies on the front nine en route to 1-under 35. But on the back nine, he had had four holes over par and ended the first round tied at 43rd at 4-over.
Noah Woolsey and Frank Garber each posted 7-over 78s. Woolsey carded 10-straight pars after a double to open his round. He picked up a birdie on 12 and was 1-over through 13 holes. But he struggled down the stretch, gaining six strokes over the final five holes and finished with a 78. Garber had three birdies including one on the opening hole, but also had seven holes over par through the first 18 holes. He started at 5-over through the first nine holes, but was just 2-over on the back nine.
Shamu Bodhidatta finished with a 12-over 83 to round out the Husky contingent. Bodhidatta, who was playing in the scoring five for just the second time this season, struggled through the first nine holes, finishing 9-over on the front nine. But he performed better on the back nine, recording back-to-back birdies on 13 and 14 and finishing just 3-over on the final nine holes.
The Huskies close out the weather-shortened competition on Wednesday morning beginning at 9:09 am. Washington is in a grouping with Notre Dame and San Diego State.
