Alvelo With Career-High 13 Strikeouts In 7-0 Husky Win
February 18, 2018 | Softball
HUNTSVILLE, Texas – Taran Alvelo recorded her 400th career strikeout in the #4 Washington Huskies' 7-0 win over the Wichita State Shockers Sunday. Alvelo struck out a career-high 13 batters in the game, while Julia DePonte drove in four runs to help the Huskies move to 9-0 on the season.
Alvelo would allow one hit and one walk in the game, moving to 5-0 in five appearances this season. The Ohio native now has 52 strikeouts on the season in just 26.0 innings pitched.
Washington picked up a first-inning run once again, with the rally starting with a Taylor Van Zee walk. Van Zee, who has reached base to start the game in eight of nine games to start the season, was driven in a few batters later thanks to a booming DePonte double.
That lead was plenty for Alvelo, who struck out the side in the first inning. It was the eighth time in her first 20 innings of the season that Alvelo had struck out the side in an inning.
DePonte's big day continued in the third inning. After Sis Bates beat out an infield single and Kirstyn Thomas took one on the arm, DePonte hit her third home run of the season, putting a charge into the ball and sending it over the left-center wall for a 4-0 lead.
Nawai Kaupe hit her first career home run to lead off the fourth inning for the Huskies, becoming the third player to hit their first home run as a Husky this year. Kaupe put everything behind a ball that left over the centerfield wall in a hurry to make it 5-0.
Kaija Gibson used her speed to help the Huskies to another run in the fifth. Gibson, who came on as a pinch-runner, would steal second to start things. Taryn Atlee then dropped a blooper into that Gibson saw all the way to come around and score from second.
Trysten Melhart would score after doubling in the sixth inning for the final 7-0 margin. Alvelo struck out the side to end the game, the fifth inning in the game in which she had multiple strikeouts.
