Hornets Sting Huskies, 6-0, To Take Series Lead
February 18, 2018 | Baseball
SACRAMENTO โย Sacramento State held Washington to four hits โ all singles โ and hammered a pair of solo home runs themselves en route to a 6-0 shutout Sunday at John Smith Field.
ย
Hornets' starter Scott Randall (1-0) threw five shutout innings, allowing three hits, three walks and striking out two to pick up a win in his college debut. Three Hornets' relievers allowed one hit and struck out four Huskies (1-2) to cap the shutout.
ย
For the third time in the series, Sacramento State (2-1)ย jumped out to an early lead. Third baseman Steven Moretto was responsible for both of the Hornets' early runs. He hit a second inning home run off UW starter Jordan Jones (0-1) and collected another RBI in the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly.
ย
Jones (0-1) was steady on the hill for the most part until he ran out of gas and found trouble in the seventh inning. He gave up a lead-off home run to P.J. Fuller and was gone from the game three batters later after allowing a walk and hit by pitch. Unfortunately for Jones and the Huskies, both of those runners would score and the Hornets would send nine batters to the plate and score four in the inning.
ย
Jones ended up allowing five earned runs over 6 1/3 innings. He gave up two walks, five hits and struck out four in his 2018 debut.
ย
The Huskies' offense was only able to put two runners on base in the same inning twice โ both coming early in the first and second. From there, UW was able put a runner on base in the third, fifth and seventh innings, but only reached as far as second base once.
ย
Four different Huskies collected hits on the day, including designated hitter Joe Wainhouse, who picked up his first career hit as a Dawg.
ย
Jack DeCooman set the Hornets down in order in the eighth inning and became the fifth Husky in the series to make their college debut on the mound.
ย
The Huskies will try to even up the series with a Monday afternoon tilt at 1:00 p.m.
