DMRs Look To Secure NCAA Bids At Notre Dame
February 16, 2018 | Track & Field
SEATTLE - One of the most unique events of indoor track, and one at which Washington has excelled in recent years, takes center stage this weekend in South Bend, Indiana, as UW sends its men's and women's distance medley relays to the Alex Wilson Invitational. Saturday morning the Husky relays will race elite DMR fields to try and secure spots in the NCAA Indoor Championships.
The top-12 men's and women's relays will earn a spot at NCAAsΒ at Texas A&M next month, and while the UW women's team currently ranks sixth nationally, it's a sign of just how fast the times typically are from Notre Dame's Alex Wilson Invite that the UW women believe they will need to post a faster time to avoid getting bumped out. Back at the UW Invitational, the group of Anna Maxwell, Raquel Tjernagel, Hannah Derby, and Maddie Meyers ran a time of 11:08.83. It will be that same quartet racing on Saturday.
On the men's side, the DawgsΒ will run a new group consisting of Nate BeamerΒ on the 1,200-meter leg, Ryan Croson on the 400-meters, Devan Kirk on the 800-meters, and Colby Gilbert anchoring for the 1,600-meter final leg.
The women's DMR will be run first at 8:45 a.m. Pacific time and the men will follow at 9 a.m. Pacific time.
Two years ago at the NCAA Indoor Championships, both Husky DMRs finished second, with Meyers anchoring the women's team that year and Gilbert running the opening 1,200-meter leg that season. The Husky women won the 2012 NCAA DMR title and were also fifth in 2015 while the men also had a podium finish in 2014, placing eighth.Β
