Huskies Hire Jason Mansfield As Assistant Coach
February 15, 2018 | Volleyball
SEATTLE โ One of the most experienced and accomplished assistant coaches in volleyball will be sitting on the Husky bench this fall as Jason Mansfield joins the staff of Head Coach Keegan Cook. Mansfield knows the Pac-12 as well as anyone, having spent fourteen seasons coaching at Stanford before coaching the past two seasons at Illinois.
ย
"I'm beyond thrilled to welcome Jason, Kim and their children to their new home in Seattle," said Cook. "With Jason we've found an outstanding teacher of the game, with high character, and over a decade of experience competing for national championships. He has both the familiarity with the Pac-12 as well as the perspective of what other top programs and conferences are doing to compete at a championship level."
ย
Mansfield started out his collegiate coaching career as a volunteer assistant with the Cardinal in 2002, and in 2004 he became a full-time assistant, helping Stanford win the NCAA title that first year. Over his Stanford tenure, he helped the Cardinal reach six Final Fours and win seven Pac-12 titles.
ย
First and foremost, Mansfield "has a passion for teaching the game in the gym," which Cook saw as the top priority. "He brings the right balance of shared values and outside perspective that we were looking for. Our team will greatly benefit from the depth of Jason's experiences coaching championship teams and developing All-American student-athletes.ย Positive, loyal, responsible and diligent are just a few of the values that people associate with Jason."
ย
As an assistant coach at Stanford, Mansfield worked with 17 different All-Americans, four National Players of the Year, and three future Olympians. At Illinois he coached three more All-Americans in two seasons, which culminated this past fall with a trip to the NCAA Round of 16 for the Fighting Illini, and an upset of his new team in the second round in Seattle.
Mansfield also compiled a stellar run as a club coach with the Vision Volleyball Club from 2000-2016 with his teams earning seven Junior Olympic medals, 26 Junior Olympic All-Tournament selections, and the club producing 19 Volleyball Magazine "Fab 50" recruits.
ย
"I'd like to thank Keegan Cook for this wonderful opportunity to join the UW program," said Mansfield. "I've always had so much respect for how hard the Huskies play, the fire they play with, and how consistent they are at competing. I'm passionate about teaching the game of volleyball and strive to help each student-athlete grow as a person and as a player. My family and I are very excited to get back to the West Coast, and I look forward to competing again in the Pac-12 Conference."
Mansfield and his wife, Kim, have a three-year-old daughter, Rylee, and a one-year-old son, Dylan.
