HAWAII – The University of Washington women's golf team opened its final fall tournament of the season on Monday carding a 4-over 296 during round one of the Pac-12 Preview at Nanea Golf Club in Hawaii. The Dawgs were led by senior Wenyung Keh who's 4-under 69 has her tied for second heading into round two.
"Well, it was a very up and down day for us but we did lead the field in birdies which was awesome," said head coach Mary Lou Mulflur. "We made some poor decisions which led to a few big numbers but the team showed a lot of grit by hanging in there through some adversity. We've just got to be more disciplined tomorrow."
Washington totaled 25 birdies on the day to lead the field, while Keh added eight of her own. The senior's 4-under 69 was one of four sub-70 rounds out of the 60-player field. She opened up by getting to six under over her first 13 holes but due to three bogeys with the addition of another birdie brought her back to 4-under.
"I was really excited to see Wenyung have some fun out there today," added Mulflur. "Even though she had a few mistakes, she played very well and with her having fun with it, it just makes everything better for her."
Junior Karen Miyamoto was next on the scoreboard for UW as she finished with a 1-over 74 to tie for 21st. Playing in UW's no. 1 spot in the lineup, Miyamoto opened with a birdie on her first hole and despite adding four blemishes over the next 12 holes, closed strong. The junior birdied two of her final five going par on the other three en route to her 1-over score.
Senior Julianne Alvarez posted a 3-over 76 to put her tied for 37th heading into Tuesday's second round. Alvarez had an interesting round in that she got to 2-over after just six holes. She then rattled off four-straight birdies to bring her back to 2-under. Despite going 5-over during the next five holes, Alvarez also closed strong with pars on her final three holes.
Senior Sarah Rhee rounded out scoring for UW as she is tied for 43rd with a 4-over 77 while sophomore Rino Sasaki is tied for 48th at 5-over 78.
Washington's second round tees off at 9:30 a.m. PT with the Huskies paired with Stanford, Arizona and Oregon State.
