Huskies Net Pair of Early Goals in 2-0 Win Over Loyola Chicago
November 01, 2018 | Men's Soccer
SEATTLE --- Corban Anderson netted a goal and an assist and Dylan Teves added his fifth goal of the year as No. 23 Washington scored twice in the first 24 minutes en route to a 2-0 non-conference victory over Loyola-Chicago on Thursday night at Husky Soccer Stadium.
The Huskies pick up their third-straight win—all by shutout—to improve to 11-7-0 on the season. The Ramblers suffer their second-straight loss after going undefeated in their previous seven and are now 9-6-2 overall.
"We've talked about these mid-majors and how our athleticism can surprise them," said UW head coach Jamie Clark. "So we wanted to come out of the gate and pressure, squeeze the game, and play at a high tempo. You can't do that the whole game, but hopefully in the first 20-30 minutes you can and create some chances."
Anderson headed home a rebound to get Washington the fist goal of the match in the 17th minute. The play started with a corner kick off the foot of Blake Bodily which Ethan Bartlow headed toward the goal. His shot was saved but went right to Anderson who headed it in for his third goal of the year.
Seven minutes later Anderson and Teves teamed up to make it a two-goal game. Anderson sent a great long ball from the midfield stripe in behind the Loyola defense where Teves ran onto it for a 1v1 chance with the keeper. He slotted the ball to the right of the diving keeper to net his fifth goal of the season.
"It was fantastic for Corban to pick up that goal and assist," said Clark. "He's the most deserving kid and its great that his name is starting to show up on the scoreboard. He does everything else, but because he doesn't show up on the scoresheet, people forget about him. Hopefully this will lead to some well-deserved accolades."
The Huskies held a a 13-2 advantage in shots in the game including an 8-0 edge in the first half. Washington seemed to dominate possession as well, holding the ball well over 75 percent of the first 45 minutes.
The Husky defense was again impressive, allowing just a pair of shots—both coming in the final five minutes of the match. The Huskies have surrendered just 12 total shots over their last three matches, recording three shutouts and holding opponents without a goal over the last 286 minutes. It was the fifth career shutout in nine career matches for goalkeeper Bryce Logan who has recorded each of the last three.
The Huskies close out the regular season on Friday, Nov. 9, hosting Oregon State at 8:00 p.m. at Husky Soccer Stadium. The Beavers currently lead the Pac-12 standings at 6-2-1 with Stanford close behind at 5-1-1.
