No. 25 Huskies Wrap Up Regular Season vs No. 22 Oregon State
November 07, 2018 | Men's Soccer
The Washington Huskies At A Glance
The Huskies close out the regular season on Friday, Nov. 9, with a big Pac-12 showdown against Oregon State University at 8:00 p.m. at Husky Soccer Stadium. The match will be broadcast on the Pac-12 Network with Ann Schatz and Christopher Sullivan providing the call.
Washington is riding a three-match winning streak heading into Friday's match, winning those three matches by identical 2-0 scores. Overall, the Huskies have won six of their last eight matches, outscoring their opponents 11-2 in their six victories. Last week, Washington played just one match, downing Loyola-Chicago 2-0 in a non-conference tilt. Senior Corban Anderson had a goal and an assist in the match while freshman Dylan Teves added another goal. Sophomore Bryce Logan recorded his third-straight shutout and fifth of his career.
The teams both have a lot to play for in their final regular-season matches. For the Huskies, they need a win to secure a berth in the NCAA Tournament, possibly even moving high enough in the RPI to get a first-round bye if things go well. For the Beavers, they need a victory and a little help from Cal to have a chance at their first-ever Pac-12 Title. Oregon State could also secure a first-round bye in the NCAA Tournament with a win.
Senior Day
All this week, the Huskies will be recognizing a group of nine players that joined the program together included six seniors. Those players being honored are: Corban Anderson, Andrew Conwell, Kyle Coffee, Ryan DeGroot, Luke Hauswirth, Saif Kerawala, Scott Menzies, Joey Parish and Quentin Pearson. A pre-game ceremony will take place for the nine along with a special video presentation at halftime.
The Oregon State Beavers At A Glance
Under first-year head coach Terry Boss, the Beavers have taken the Pac-12 by storm, posting a 6-3-1 conference record which has Oregon State battling for its first Pac-12 title. A victory next week by the Beavers and a loss by Stanford would give Oregon State a share of the title. Stanford plays Cal on Thursday night, so the Beavers will know their fate before they play UW on Friday.
Senior forward Don Tchilao continues to be an impressive scoring machine, tallying seven goals and seven assists, ranking second in the Pac-12 with 21 assists. Freshman forward Gloire Amanda is the odds on favorite for Freshman of the Year, ranking third in the conference with eight goals on the season. Both Amanda and Tchilao scored goals for Oregon State when the Beavers beat Washington 4-2 in Corvallis back in September with Amanda's goal counting as the eventual match-winner.
Series History vs. Oregon State
Washington holds a 40-15-4 overall record against Oregon State including an 21-7-0 mark in games in Seattle. The Beavers have won three of the last four matches between the two, scoring four goals in each of the last two. Earlier this year, Oregon State defeated Washington 4-2 after winning 4-3 in Corvallis to close out the regular season last year. The Huskies won 2-1 last season when the teams played in Seattle as Oregon State struck 45 seconds into the second half to go up early before Joey Parish tallied two goals later in the half to give UW the win.
RPI Check-In
Washington moved up two more spots to No. 25 in the latest RPI ratings released by the NCAA on Tuesday, that's the highest since being No. 22 in the second rating of the year (Oct. 1). The victory over Loyola-Chicago also moved the Huskies ahead of Oregon State to No. 27 while still trailing No. 4 Stanford and No. 21 UCLA among Pac-12 teams in the Top 30. Other UW opponents in the Top 65 are: Maryland (No. 12), Denver (No. 15), Portland (No. 38), Akron (No. 40), Seattle U (No. 49), Loyola-Chicago (No. 64).
Dominating Defense
Washington's defense has been impressive this season, allowing just 20 goals and posting eight shutouts through 18 matches.
The Huskies haven't just held teams from scoring, but have held teams from taking many shots at all. Washington has allowed just 65 total shots on goal through 18 matches (3.61 per match) and 153 shots overall (8.5 per match).
Over its last three matches, the defense has been incredible, surrendering just 12 total shots and only four on goal while posting three-straight shutouts. Overall, the Huskies have posted a 286-minute scoreless streak.
Against UCLA on Oct 25, Washington limited the high-power Bruins to just three total shots in the match–the fewest shots by a Pac-12 team in a conference match this year.
Injuries Piling Up
The Huskies have been dealing with injuries throughout the year, but have really been hit hard over the last month. Junior goalkeeper Saif Kerawala has missed the last seven matches due to an injury suffered in the match against Cal (10/11). The Huskies' center back tandem of senior Quentin Pearson (end of Stanford match 10/14) and freshman Ethan Bartlow (both matches in Bay area) missed time two weeks ago due to concussions, with Bartlow returning to the lineup last week. Pearson has missed the last four matches due to injury. Also, junior Joey Parish, who has turned into the team's utility man this year, has missed the past four matches as well.
Overall, just five players have appeared in all 18 matches for the Huskies this year: seniors Scott Menzies, Corban Anderson and Kyle Coffee, and juniors John Magnus and Jaret Townsend.
Menzies the Man!
Senior Scott Menzies has been on fire lately, recording his eighth and ninth goals of the season two weeks ago against UCLA and SDSU. Those goals gave him on in each of his last four matches, a streak which came to an end against Loyola-Chicago. He currently ranks second in the Pac-12 with nine goals, which are the most by a Husky since Brent Richards scored 10 during the 2011 season.
Menzies has done much of his damage of late from off the bench as his last five matches have been the only five he hasn't started this season. Earlier this year, he recorded a pair of goals against Gonzaga–the second multi-goal match of his career. In addition, Menzies has posted a total of four match-winning goals this year, giving him nine in his career.
Gotta Get That First One
Washington has been solid when scoring the first goal of the season, posting an 11-1-0 record when scoring the match's first goal. That includes wins in each of its last three games as the Huskies netted the opening goal in each. (The lone loss was the 3-2, 2 OT loss vs Stanford.) On the other hand, the Huskies are 0-6-0 when conceding the first goal.
That's Just Offensive, Man
The Washington offense has been impressive throughout the season, scoring 29 goals through its first 18 matches. The Huskies are averaging 1.61 goals per match thus far with a total of 13 Huskies having recorded at least two points this season.
Nine different players have found the back of the net for the Huskies with freshman Charlie Ostrem being the latest to score his first goal, opening the scoring at Cal on Oct. 18. Scott Menzies has recorded five goals in his last seven matches to lead the team with nine goals on the season. Kyle Coffee is second on the team in points with 14 (4 goals, 6 assists) with five different players each adding three assists.
Last year, UW scored 40 goals–the most since tallying 45 during in 2013. It was just the fourth time in the last 18 years the Huskies had scored 40+ goals in a season. Washington finished second in the Pac-12 and 17th in the NCAA with its 2.00 goals per game average, scoring at least three goals in a match seven times last season, going 6-1-0 in those contests.
Grimsby's Growth
Redshirt sophomore Cole Grimsby has been impressive this season for the Huskies, starting all but one match at left back and playing 1,426 minutes–something that seemed impossible last season. Grimsby was low on the depth chart last year, appearing in just one match, playing the final minute in an early-season blowout. However, he has grown by leaps and bounds in the off-season and has been rewarded with the starting spot. Through 18 matches, he has recorded two assists and helped anchor a defense which has allowed just 20 goals this season.
Twice is Fun
Earlier this season, the Huskies posted a streak of scoring 2+ goals in eight-straight matches, dating back to last season. That matched the longest streak of games with 2+ goals since the 1991-92 season and ended up one shy of the program record of nine set during the 1981 season. Washington is 10-3-0 this season when scoring two or more goals in a match including a winning three-straight 2-0 wins over the last two weeks.
In the Rankings ...
The Huskies found themselves back in the United Soccer Coaches Top 25 rankings last week, and currently are ranked No. 25 after three big wins. Washington has been ranked as high as No. 3 and gone without votes, but has been back in the top 25 in each of the last two weeks.
Stopping the PKs
Washington allowed its first PK goal in 62 matches when Stanford converted from the spot on Oct. 14. The Huskies hadn't allowed a PK goal by an opponent since UCLA converted two of three from the spot in Seattle on Oct. 4, 2015. Saif Kerawala has not allowed a PK in his collegiate career, stopping both attempts against him in three seasons. UW has converted all three attempts from the spot this year including two over a two-match span in mid-October in home games against Cal and Stanford.
Overtime Blues
The Huskies' played a pair of overtime matches when they were last at home including snapping a streak of five-straight overtime contests without a win by recording a 1-0 double-overtime victory vs. Cal on Oct. 11. Washington had been 0-4-1 in its last five overtime games with its last win coming in a 1-0 victory at Stanford on Oct. 30, 2016.
Number 200 for Clark
UW's match vs. New Mexico on Aug. 27 was the 200th match coached by UW Head Coach Jamie Clark in 11 seasons. Clark posted a 128-50-22 record in 200 matches during three stops as a head coach including an 89-35-19 record at UW. Clark began his coaching career at Harvard where his teams went 26-10-1 in two seasons. He coached one year at Creighton, going 13-5-2 before moving to Seattle.
