Huskies Head to the Bay to Face Familiar Foes

SEATTLE --- The Huskies hit the road this week for their final two away matches of the 2018 regular season. The opponents will be quite familiar as Washington faces off against California and Stanford for the second-straight week. The Huskies are in Berkeley to take on the Golden Bears on Thursday at 3:00 p.m. at Edwards Stadium, then head across the Bay for a rematch against Stanford on Sunday at 3:00 p.m. at Cagan Stadium. Both matches are being broadcast on the Pac-12 Network with live stats available from each respective school's website or through the links on GoHuskies.com.

The Huskies played a lot of soccer last week as both matches against the Bay area schools on Montlake were settled in double overtime. On Thursday, Scott Menzies converted a penalty kick early in the second overtime to give Washington a 1-0 victory over Cal. The Huskies earned the kick after Jaret Townsend was fouled after making a nice run into the box to set up the spot kick.

On Sunday, Washington jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead, but No. 10 Stanford fought back and took a 2-1 lead late in the second half. The Huskies were able to level the score with under five minutes remaining as Quentin Pearson was fouled in the box and Corban Anderson stepped up to convert the penalty. However, the Cardinal would find the back of the net with just over three minutes to go in the second overtime to pull out a 3-2 win.

The California Golden Bears At A Glance
The Golden Bears were swept on their trip to the Northwest, losing 1-0 to UW and to Oregon State last week. Cal now has just one win over its last seven matches: a 1-0 victory over San Diego State at home on Sunday, Sept. 30. Cal opened conference play with three-straight home matches, but dropped its first one to UCLA 2-1 and lost 4-2 to Stanford last week. Prior to the Pac-12 slate, the Golden Bears were 4-1-2. Despite being winless on the road this year, Cal does hold a 4-2-0 record in home matches.

Senior midfielder and All-American Shinya Kadono leads the conference in goals (11), points (24) and shots (46). The next closest players in the Pac-12 in goals each have six and the second-best point total is 15. Overall he has 11 of the team's 20 goals, which is tied for the most by a Pac-12 team this year. However, the team ranks last in the conference in goals against average at 1.39, allowing 19 goals through 13 matches.

Washington leads the all-time series 31-19-10 and holds a 14-11-3 edge in games at Cal. Including Thursday's win, the Huskies have lost just twice in the last 15 matches between the two schools since Head Coach Jamie Clark took over in 2011. Washington is 10-2-3 in those last 15 matches and has wins in four of the last five games in the series. Last year the teams split the season series with the Huskies winning 3-0 at home but losing 2-1 at Berkeley. In last season's match at Cal, the Golden Bears struck early with a goal by Kadono in the 11th minute, but Luke Hauswirth answered with a tally in the 16th. But Cal would get the match-winner from Jose Carerra-Garcia in the 77th minute to win 2-1.

The Stanford Cardinal At A Glance
The Cardinal are the three-time defending NCAA National Champs, winning each title without allowing a single goal throughout the tournament. Stanford's defense is again among the best in the country again this year, allowing just seven goals through 12 matches this season. The Cardinal got off to a bit of a slow start, playing to three-straight ties. However, Stanford is 7-2-0 since then, outscoring its opponents 19-6 over that stretch.

The Huskies are averaging 1.54 goals per match thus far with a total of 12 Huskies having recorded points this season (11 of which have tallied two or more points). Eight different players have found the back of the net for the Huskies with Scott Menzies taking back the team lead by scoring his fifth goal of the season from the penalty spot on Sunday. Kyle Coffee leads the team in points with 12 (4 goals, 4 assists) with three different players recording three assists. Sophomore Blake Bodily became the latest Husky to scored his first goal of the year, opening the scoring at San Diego State on Sunday.

Last year, UW scored 40 goalsβthe most since tallying 45 during in 2013. It was just the fourth time in the last 18 years the Huskies had scored 40+ goals in a season. Washington finished second in the Pac-12 and 17th in the NCAA with its 2.00 goals per game average, scoring at least three goals in a match seven times last season, going 6-1-0 in those contests.

Earlier this season, the Huskies posted a streak of scoring 2+ goals in eight-straight matches, dating back to last season. It was just the second time in the last 37 matches the Cardinal had surrendered two or more goals in a match.

The Huskies' played a pair of overtime matches last week including snapping a streak of five-straight overtime contests without a win by recording a 1-0 double-overtime victory vs. Cal on Thursday. Washington had been 0-4-1 in its last five overtime games with its last win coming in a 1-0 victory at Stanford on Oct. 30, 2016.

Washington allowed its first PK goal in 62 matches when Stanford converted from the spot on Sunday. The Huskies hadn't allowed a PK goal by an opponent since UCLA converted two of three from the spot in a wild game in Seattle on Oct. 4, 2015. Saif Kerawala has not allowed a PK in his collegiate career, stopping both attempts against him in three seasons. Washington has converted all three attempts from the spot including one each in its last two matches with Scott Menzies scoring on Thursday and Corban Anderson on Sunday.
