Huskies Soar Over Eagles In Season Opener
January 13, 2018 | Men's Tennis
SEATTLE โ Washington men's tennis started the 2018 season strong with a commanding 7-0 win over Eastern Washington at the Nordstrom Tennis Center on Saturday afternoon.
ย
"Today felt amazing," Washington head coach Matt Anger said. "Last night we were talking about how we felt like the horse waiting to be let out of the gate in a race. We were let out of the gates and we were able to run fast. It was fun to get going."
ย
The doubles pairing of Piers Foley and Mitch Stewart got off to a hot start and a strong finish. They took down their Eastern Washington foes 6-0. In his first dual match, freshman Jack Davis teamed up with senior Jake Douglas to clinch the doubles point with a 6-1 win.
ย
Court one was a closer match than the other doubles pairings. Kawaika Lam and Enzo Sommer battled hard with the Eagles duo. After going down 5-4, the Huskies scored three-straight points to win, 7-5.
ย
Washington took care of Eastern Washington handily in each singles match. In every set, each Husky won by three or more points.
ย
Foley got the Dawgs off to a strong start in singles. He was the first to finish, taking the first set 6-1 and the second set with the same score. Stewart followed that up with a 6-2, 6-0 win at the No. 2 spot.
ย
Senior captain Douglas got off to a slow start in his opening set. Once he got rolling, he took care of the match in two sets, 6-2, 6-1.
ย
"It was my first match of my last season and I got a little too excited, I think," Douglas said. "I settled down pretty quick and felt comfortable again. It's been a while since my last college match and it is a different feeling."
ย
At the No. 3 and No. 4 spots, Sommer and Amit Batta handled their matches well. Sommer won 6-2, 6-2, and Batta, who did not play in doubles, battled for a 6-3, 6-2 win.
ย
Following up his first doubles victory, freshman Davis won his singles match as well. He was the last to finish his match. With his teammates cheering him on, he battled tough to pull out the match win, 6-2, 6-3.
ย
"Today was amazing," Davis said. "I've been waiting for that match for two years since I committed. To finally get out there and play some college tennis was pretty special. It was nerve-wrecking to have everyone watch me in the last match, but it was fun to play for them and for everyone."
