Dawgs Open Fall Ball With First Practice
September 26, 2017 | Baseball
SEATTLE - The University of Washington baseball team gathered on Monday for the first team practice of the new 2017-18 season. It was the first time that the Huskies' 15 newcomers joined the core group of veterans at the Diamond on Montlake under the watchful eye of ninth-year head coach Lindsay Meggs and the rest of the baseball staff.
Not only were there plenty of new faces on the team, it was the first time the newly transformed staff took to Husky Ballpark with this group of players. Dave Nakama is embarking on his second stint with the staff and will work closely with the outfielders on defense. New recruiting coordinator, but fifth-year assistant, Donegal Fergus, has stepped in as the main tutor for the catching crew, replacing former volunteer assistant Tanner Swanson who moved on to be an assistant with Santa Clara. Jason Kelly is back for his sixth season as associate head coach and pitching coach, but we'll have eight new faces (and arms) in his stable.
Despite all the newcomers learning the ropes on the fly, the team ran an efficient and enthusiastic practice. "This is how we do it at Washington," a pleased Meggs told his team following the squad's first full workout.
The team continues fall training on the field through the end of October. The Purple-and-Gold World Series is tenatively (weather permitting) scheduled to take place Oct. 24, 25 and 27.
The last week of October and all of November will be spent on individual sessions and conditioning. The squad caps November with the Omaha Challenge -- a series of team-building competitions that foster camaraderie and team work.
