Huskies Fall 1-0 In Fierce Battle with #13 Cal
September 23, 2017 | Women's Soccer
SEATTLE – The Washington Huskies fell in a closely fought battle against the #13 California Golden Bears Saturday night, losing 1-0 in the Pac-12 opener. The loss snaps Washington's five-game winning streak and a 516-minute shutout streak. The Huskies are 7-3-0 on the season now, while Cal is 8-1-0.
Sarah Shimer had her shutout streak end today after 515:54 minutes. That stretch was the longest shutout streak by a Husky goalie since the turn of the century. The senior made eight saves, setting a new career high.
Shimer shined early on, making two saves in the 10th minute in quick succession. Shimer rushed forward to stop a one-on-one chance, then made a leaping save to push the second shot over the crossbar.
Sianna Siemonsma set up Kimberly Keever for one of many chances in front of goal at 17'. Siemonsma sent a low cross streaking across the face of goal to Keever. The senior slid forward for a shot but the ball was just out of reach of her foot, going out the box away.
That would be the best chance of the first half, as heavy pressure in the midfield on both sides prevented any significant possession. Shots were 5-2 in Cal's favor after 45 minutes of play, with corners 4-3 Cal.
Shannon Simon had two chances in a three-minute span that almost put the Huskies ahead. At 52', Pascale Dumesnil booted in an early cross as the attack rounded into form. The cross found the far post where Simon beat her defender and the goalie to it. The ball bounced too high for Simon's outstretched leg, however, and went out of play.
At 55, Dumesnil started another chance, this time stealing a pass from Cal's defense. Dumesnil found Dominique Bond-Flasza on the right wing, who then sent in a cross to Simon. Simon was in position for the ball but it curved just a bit too closely to goal and was caught.
Cal took the lead at 61:54, scoring the game's only goal. Anja Koehler scored after making a run to the far post, with Luca Deza picking up the assist.
The Husky offense would keep pushing for the tying goal but could not quite find it. Keever had a powerful header at 65' off a pass from Bond-Flasza but sent the rocket shot straight into the goalie.
In the 80th minute, Anissa Dadkhah took a shot from outside the box. Dadkhah's shot was out of the goalie's reach but over the bar as well, landing on the top of the netting.
Washington would pressure heavily for the last few minutes, ending with a Simon shot as time ran out, but took the loss.
The Huskies will take on the Utah Utes next on Thursday, September 28 at 7:30 pm at Husky Soccer Stadium.
