ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. --- The University of Washington men's golf team carded the lone round below par in the afternoon session, moving into second place at 5-over 581 (294-287) at the end of the first day of the William H. Tucker Invitational hosted by the University of New Mexico on Monday.
Washington opened the day with a respectable 6-over par 294 in the first round, good enough to be in a three-way tie for fifth in the team standings. The Huskies saw a lot of red figures in the second round depsite a strong wind and late rain in the area, carding a 1-under 287 to jump up three spots into second. UNLV sits in first place at 1-under 575 (282-293) with BYU five shots back in third at 10-over 586 (284-302).
"It was an exceptional score for us," said head coach Alan Murray. "It was extra windy and it was a tough championship course. The course had a difficult setup as well so an under par score was impressive."
The Huskies end the first day with three golfers in the top seven on the leaderboard, led by Henry Lee, who is in a two-way tie for fourth at 1-under 143 (73-70).
Lee opened the day with bogies on his first three holes, giving up four strokes early on. After a string of pars he picked up three birdies over the final seven holes to finish the first round at 1-over 73. In the afternoon session, Lee carded three birdies to just one bogey and recorded a 2-under 70 to finish the day.
Carl Yuan is just one shot back of Lee in sixth after finishing with an even-par 144 (71-73). Yuan had Washington's low round in the morning, recording six birdies to finish at 1-under. After bogeys on two of the first three holes in the second round, he picked up a pair of birdies to close out the front nine before a bogey on the final hole put him back in the black at 1-over.
Frank Garber tied for the low round in the afternoon, carding a 3-under 69 to move up into a tie for 7th at the end of the day. Garber struggled a bit in the morning session, carding a 4-over 76. However, he rebounded well in the second round, opening with scores under par in five of the first 11 holes including an eagle to drop all the way to 6-under. The eagle was the first by a Husky this year and one of 10 on the course on Friday.
Freshman Noah Woolsey finished the day at 5-over 149 (74-75) while fellow freshman Jan Schneider rounded out the group with a 12-over 156 (79-77). Shamu Bodhidatta competed as an individual and recorded at 16-over 160 (80-80).
"It was a great experience for our two freshman," said Murray. "For them to get out on a great course and battle through tough conditions will really help them develop down the line."
The tournament was late addition to the schedule after the Huskies' season opener and the final round of their next competition were cancelled due to weather.
"The guys had great attitudes and showed a lot of heart out there," said Murray. "We need to play a good round tomorrow and hopefully reel UNLV in and bring home some hardware."
The final day of competition at the 7,556 yard UNM Championship South Course is slated to begin at 6:45 am on Saturday.
