September 18, 2017 | Men's Golf
TOLEDO, OHIO – The University of Washington men's golf team opened the 2017-18 season with a solid showing over the first 36 holes of the Inverness Intercollegiate, posting a 1-over 569 (284-285) to sit in fifth place among 13 teams Monday at the Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio.
The Huskies sit just two shots back of Michigan and three behind UCLA heading into the final round. St. Mary's (CA) leads the way at 10-under par with Michigan State close behind at 9-under.
Sophomore Henry Lee led the way for the Huskies from the No. 2 spot, sitting in a tie for sixth overall with a 4-under 138. After opening the day with bogeys on two of his first three holes, Lee rallied to birdie three of the next four holes and added two more the rest of the way to finish at 3-under. Lee then wrote down par on 17 of 18 holes in the second round, picking up a birdie on his 17th hole to finish with a 70.
Senior Frank Garber finished the day at 1-over 143 and is tied for 25th among the 87 competitors. Garber, who played from the No. 4 spot, closed out the first round with bogeys on the final two holes to card a 72, then opened the second round with a birdie, recording an even-par 71 over the final 18 holes.
Junior Carl Yuan posted an even-par 71 over the first 18 holes, but struggled in the afternoon session, posting a 3-over 74 to sit at 3-over 145. Yuan had a bogey and a double early in the second round, but brought it back down to 1-over with a pair of birdies late. However, a couple of bogeys over the final four holes left him at 3-over for the round.
Washington's pair of freshman competitors--Noah Woolsey and Jan Schneider-- each finished at the day with a 4-over 146, tied for 43rd on the leaderboard.
Noah Woolsey rebounded from a tough start which included four bogeys over a five-hole stretch, recording a pair of late birdies to card a 73 in the first round. Woolsey looked sharp through much of the second round before a tough finish saw him move from 1-under to 2-over over the final two holes.
Schneider saw the Huskies best improvement from one round to the next, dropping four strokes to finish the second round at even-par 71. His first collegiate hole was one to forget as he doubled hole No. 6 on the Inverness Club course. However, just six holes later he tallied his first birdie and went on to post a 75. In the second round he recorded four birdies and nearly had his first round below par, but a late bogey left him at even par.
The Inverness Intercollegiate wraps up on Tuesday with the final round on the par-71, 7,323 yard course beginning at 8:30 a.m.
