Huskies Deal Terps Their First Loss In Straight Sets
September 15, 2017 | Volleyball
COLLEGE PARK, Md. โ The seventh-ranked Husky volleyball team closed out nonconference play with a big road win, knocking Maryland from the ranks of the unbeaten with a 25-11, 25-19, 25-18 win in front of 1,137 fans at the XFINITY Center. The win gave the Dawgs the team title at the Maryland Challenge and sends Washington into Pac-12 play with a 10-1 record and eight consecutive victories.
ย
The Huskies did not make an attacking error until 15 points into the second set, playing an error-free first set that saw them hit .640 and rattle the momentum of a Terrapins squad that had swept 18th-ranked USC on Thursday and also swept Oklahoma earlier in the day to get to 11-0.
ย
Washington was the only team to go undefeated over the now concluded four year series that included Maryland, USC, Oklahoma, and for one season, Wisconsin.
ย
The Huskies finished with a .319 attack percentage for the match and held Maryland to .096. The Dawgs served a season-high 10 aces and had nine blocks compared to six for the Terps.
ย
During the first set, senior libero Tia Scambray became the 12th Husky to surpass the 1,000 career digs mark. She had 12 digs total and contributed solid passing that kept setter Bailey Tanner in system. Tanner had 30 assists, six digs, two kills and two blocks. Scambray also had two aces to break a tie with former teammate Krista Vansant for 11th-place in the Husky records with 113.
ย
All-American Courtney Schwan had 11 kills and hit .417, serving three aces and adding nine digs and two blocks. Senior Carly DeHoog also had eight kills on a .316 percentage and she had five blocks to share the team-high with senior Marion Hazelwood. Junior Destiny Julye added seven kills and Kara Bajema had four, all in the third set.
ย
"Maryland is a physical team, they've got some blockers that look like what we'll see in the Pac-12," said Head Coach Keegan Cook, "so offensively I'm really pleased with our ability to do well over long periods of time. That first set made a great statement, not having a hitting error, that was big.
ย
"In the second and third sets defensively I thought we gave a great effort, the block was really good against their outside hitters, and we did a good job of picking up offspeed shots, so there was some progress all around."
ย
The Huskies jumped out to a 3-0 lead with two kills from Schwan and a dump kill from Tanner. Hazelwood had a slide kill on her first swing for a 4-1 advantage. Scambray had a great save on a near-block from the Terps and Julye finished UW's second chance for a 6-4 lead. A roll shot from Schwan out of the back row and a Maryland error increased the lead to 10-5 and Maryland called its first timeout. The Terps broke the run but Tanner answered by winding up for a kill on a UM overpass for 11-6. Scambray had a tough serve overpassed and Schwan tapped it down for 13-8, and then Scambray backed that up with a serve up the right sideline that was shanked for an ace. A DeHoog right side kill continued to help the Dawgs inch away and a missed setting connection for Maryland made it 18-10 Huskies and Maryland burned its last timeout. Out of the break, the Huskies had a couple blocks and then Schwan had a dig that let Tanner find DeHoog for a transition kill. Schwan aced the Terrapins to keep the run going at six in a row and 21-10. DeHoog added two more blasts from the right as UW rolled to the finish. Finau had an ace off the tape to get to set point at 24-11 and a Terps error ended it on the next point. Washington did not make a single error in the first set, hitting a dominant .640 with 16 kills on 25 swings, led by DeHoog who killed six of her seven swings. It was UW's best hitting set of the season.
ย
Washington opened set two with a rejection on the right pin by Lauren Sanders and Tanner. Shayne McPherson laid out for a pancake dig that ended in a Maryland net error for 2-2. DeHoog churned another into open space in transition and then she and Hazelwood met for a right pin rejection to help power a 4-0 run and a 6-3 lead. The DeHoog-Hazelwood combo blocked another for 8-4 Dawgs. Schwan popped up a dig and Julye crushed a Tanner set for 9-4 and Maryland took time. The Terps got a block to snap the run but UW answered with a block of its own from Hazelwood and DeHoog for 12-5. Maryland crept within four point but Julye had a big rally-ended through the block from the left for 14-9. Schwan poked one up the left sideline for a kill and then had another change-up fall to push UW back up, 16-10. A DeHoog dig led to a Schwan crosscourt blast for 18-11 and the Terps used their final timeout. Maryland came out of the break with a 3-0 run to climb back into it, and had a swing for another point, but DeHoog and Hazelwood came up with a huge stuff to get the Huskies back on track. Julye had a perfect pass and then took the Tanner set with a big swing for 22-16 Dawgs. McPherson floated an ace just over the net and down for an ace for 23-16. The Huskies made a couple errors late and called their first timeout leading 23-19. Washington converted in serve-receive out of the break as Scambray laid out for a perfect pass and Julye had another kill for set point at 24-19. Julye then went back and floated an ace that glanced off the Terrapin passer for an ace to end it, 25-19. The Dawgs cooled off after the blazing first set, hitting .195, but the block got going to compensate, rejecting five Maryland swings. Julye had six kills in the set and Schwan had five more.
ย
Hazelwood had a kill just off a block touch and Schwan had a big swing fall for 2-1 early in set three. An ace from Schwan made it 4-3 Dawgs. McPherson picked up another ace as the Huskies opened up the first two point lead at 7-5. Kara Bajema subbed in and scored a block with Sanders for another point on McPherson's serve, and then Bajema had a kill in transition for 9-5. Tanner and Sanders roofed another Maryland swing to double up the Terps at 12-6 and force Maryland's first timeout as it was a 7-1 run overall. Out of the break, Bajema aced the Terps to extend the lead. Another ace for Scambray got the Huskies to 15 with an eight-point lead. Maryland hit wide and used its last timeout at 16-7 Dawgs. Hazelwood cleaned up a block in the middle for 17-9. Bajema tooled the block for a kill and then Sanders pounded down an overpass off a McPherson serve for 21-13. The Dawgs got to match point at 24-16 off a back row finish from Bajema. Maryland saved a couple but left a tip try short and in the net to end it, 25-18. Bajema's four kills on six swings without a miss helped spark the offense in the set, as UW hit .214 and held Maryland to .088. Four aces and four blocks also helped the Dawgs shut the door.
ย
The Huskies will now gear up for the Pac-12 grind, which takes them to Pullman next week to take on the Cougars in the opener. Washington and Washington State will meet next Wednesday, Sept. 20, at 6 p.m. in a live Pac-12 Networks showdown.
