SEATTLE - Twenty matches now stand between the Huskies and a third consecutive Pac-12 Volleyball Championship, and the long road begins this Wednesday, Sept. 20, in Pullman against the rival Cougars. The conference opener for both squads will be televised live on the Pac-12 Networks at 6 p.m. from Bohler Gym. From there, the Huskies will return to Seattle before making a quick turnaround down to Tempe, Ariz. to test Arizona State this Sunday at 1 p.m., also live on Pac-12 Networks.
The Huskies, ranked seventh, finished nonconference play with a 10-1 record, having won eight matches in a row and 24 of their past 25 sets. Pac-12 Player of the Year Courtney Schwan has led the offense with 3.14 kills per set, but right behind her is senior Carly DeHoog with 3.06 kills per set. DeHoog has 107 kills on the year, already surpassing her previous season-high (100 kills in 2015) in just 11 matches. DeHoog is hitting .393, highest in the Pac-12 among outside hitters. Senior Bailey Tanner has set the Huskies to a .283 attack percentage thus far, while UW has held its opponents to a .161 mark.
Washington leads the Pac-12 through nonconference play with 1.94 aces per set, as Schwan has 19 total and 0.54 per set, already matching the most aces she's ever had in a full season. Senior Tia Scambray also has 15 aces, a 0.43 aces/set average, and is up to 113 for her career. Scambray has transitioned from a six-rotation outside hitter to the team's starting libero this season, and leads the team with 4.06 digs per set. The Huskies have also worked in two new starting middle blockers in senior Marion Hazelwood and freshman Lauren Sanders. Hazelwood currently leads the Pac-12 with 1.71 blocks per set and Sanders is right behind in second with 1.66, with DeHoog contributing to the blocking in a big way with 1.26 blocks per set. The Huskies have also had to make do without All-American Crissy Jones, who sprained her ankle two days before the season opener and has yet to make her senior season debut.
Last season the Huskies won a crowded Pac-12 race with a 16-4 record, and an equally tight race is to be expected, as the Pac-12 currently has seven teams ranked in the top-25 and more looking to break in, with defending NCAA Champion Stanford at No. 4 leading the way. Washington shared the 2015 Pac-12 title with USC with 18-2 records, and also won in 2013 with an 18-2 mark.
Washington State, like the Huskies, have just one loss thus far, a five set loss to Baylor back in the opening weekend. WSU has won eight matches in a row, including a five set win over Missouri State, the one common opponent with UW, as the Huskies beat MSU in four sets. The Cougars rank 2nd in the NCAA in blocks per set at 3.35, one spot ahead of the Huskies at 3.34. WSU also has held opponents to a Pac-12 best .124 attack percentage, but ranks last in kills per set with 12.81. Junior Taylor Mims has led the offense with 3.60 kills per set and junior McKenna Woodrofd is adding 2.90. Sophomore middle Jocelyn Urias is the top blocker with 1.62 per set and is hitting .403 with 1.40 kills per set. Alexis Dirige is third in the Pac-12 so far with 4.26 digs per set. The teams split their two meetings last year, with each team winning on the other's home court. The Huskies have seven wins in a row in Pullman.
The Sun Devils, under the direction of Husky Hall of Famer Sanja Tomasevic, are 10-2 and will open Pac-12 play at home against Arizona on Thursday. ASU has yet to face a ranked opponent, but has won six in a row since losses to Gonzaga and Portland State. Senior Oluoma Okaro is the No. 3 point producer so far in the Pac-12, with 5.44 points and 4.71 kills per set. She's one of the top servers as well, averaging 0.31 aces per set. Freshman setter Shelbie Dobmeier is averaging a Pac-12 best 12.04 assists per set and senior libero Halle Harker also leads the conference with 5.48 digs per set. The Sun Devils are hitting .262 as a team and holding opponents to a .166 mark. The Dawgs have won eight straight in the series but 15 in a row in Tempe.
