Huskies Nipped 2-1 In OT
August 27, 2017 | Women's Soccer
SEATTLE – The Washington Huskies came out with a strong start but fell 2-1 in overtime to the Southern Methodist Mustangs in the home opener for the Huskies. Anissa Dadkhah scored her first goal as a Husky to put Washington on top in the first half but a tying goal in the final 45 sent the game to overtime, where SMU triumphed. The loss puts Washington's record at 2-2-0, while SMU is now 2-0-2.
Sarah Shimer would make five saves in the game, matching her career high, but took the loss.
The Huskies looked dangerous early on, drawing a foul just a few steps out of the box ten minutes into the game. Shannon Simon would take the free kick and curve it just wide of the net.
It was Dadkhah who put the Huskies on top at 28:44. A cross from out wide found a dangerous spot in the box, careening off a SMU defender as the Huskies converged on it. Dadkhah was following the play and found herself all alone in front of the net for the goal.
Mireya Grey almost made it 2-0 Huskies at 34:51, just a few minutes after she entered the game. Grey burst to the net for a cross, only to have the goalie reach the ball at the exact same time. Grey's shot deflected wide from the scrum.
Shots in the first half would favor Washington 7-3.
SMU entered the second half with some momentum and tied the game 12 minutes in. Isabelle Nashmi had the goal that made it 1-1.
In the 77th minute, Lisa Jensen made a terrific play to keep the Huskies in it. Shimer was left alone with an attacking Mustang to the side of the goal. Shimer forced a centering pass that unfortunately found an SMU attacker with an open net. Jensen was able to fight back into the play and block the shot away in time to save the day.
Shots were 13-8 after a deadlocked regulation.
Rachel Wheeler nearly gave Washington the lead five minutes into OT. Kimberly Keever sent in a cross that missed the diving Wheeler's head by mere inches, with the ball bouncing wide of goal.
SMU would score in the 100th minute to get the win, with Vanessa Valadez scoring to make it 2-1.
The Huskies will be next in action on Friday, September 1 when they take on the Florida Gators at 8:00 pm PT. Tickets for that game are available online.
