August 21, 2017 | Women's Soccer
SEATTLE - The Washington Huskies finish up their three-game road trip this week before returning to Seattle for their home opener, coming this Sunday. ย First up is a Thursday, August 24 matchup with Illinois at 5:00 pm PT. ย The home opener for the Huskies will be Sunday, August 27 at 12:30 pm PT against SMU.
Washington has started the year 1-1-0, falling 2-0 in the season-opener to Michigan before a rousing 4-0 shutout win over Michigan State. ย That game saw Sianna Siemonsma and Jessika Cowart each score their first collegiate goals, with Cowart's coming in her first game as a Husky. ย Shannon Simon also scored two goals in that game for her second career multi-goal game. ย Simon also scored two goals against Cal State Northridge on Sept. 11, 2015.
Sarah Shimer picked up her fifth career shutout in that Michigan State victory as well, turning aside the only shot she faced in the game. ย That gave Shimer five career shutouts, putting her alone in ninth place in Huskies history in that category. ย The one shot on goal against was also the lowest SOG total allowed by the Huskies since Sept. 3, 2010 in a 4-0 win over Syracuse.
This year, Illinois has begun 1-1-0, with a 2-1 win over DePaul and a 3-1 loss to Missouri, both at home. ย The Fighting Illini went 6-11-2 in 2016 and return seven starters from last season, including their top two goal-scorers in Patricia George and Kara Marbury. ย Since 2000, the Huskies are 1-1 against Illinois. Washington defeated Illinois 2-1 in the last matchup of these two teams, coming in Seattle on Sept. 4, 2015. ย Shannon Simon scored the game-winner in that game.
The Southern Methodist Mustangs are 1-0-1 thus far this year, having taken down No. 17 Arkansas 1-0 in overtime before tying No. 16 Oklahoma. ย Last season, SMU went 13-7-2, finishing 36th in the RPI. ย Nine starters from last year's team are back, including Vanessa Valadez, Allie Thornton, and Blair Thorpe. ย That trio scored 24 goals for the Mustangs last season, with Thornton and Valadezย each making the All-AAC First Team.
