Nakama Returns To UW As Volunteer Assistant Coach
July 24, 2017 | Baseball
SEATTLE β Dave Nakama, who was an associate head coach for Lindsay Meggs in his first three seasons at Washington from 2010-12, has returned to the Huskies as a volunteer assistant, Meggs announced.
Β
"Dave is a very talented coach who is one of the best player development people in our game," Meggs said. "Dave has a great relationship with the players, yet he brings a blue-collar work ethic to the field every day."
Β
Nakama originally left UW to take over as head coach at San Jose State, where he led the Spartans' program for four years from 2013 to 2016. He has 33 years of coaching experience under his belt, most recently as head coach at Treasure Valley Community College in Ontario, Ore. during the 2017 season. Β
Β
In his first stint with the Huskies, Nakama was in charge of recruiting, coordinated all hitting, assisted with team defense and oversaw the outfielders. Nakama was instrumental in recruiting the Huskies' 2012 class of newcomers, which was ranked among the best in the west by Baseball America and Collegiate Baseball. Two of those players he recruited Β (Blake Snell and Robert Stephenson) Β were drafted out of high school and are current Major Leaguers, while eight others were eventually part of the Huskies' record-setting 2014 MLB Draft class.
Β
"Dave is a proven winner having been to the College World Series as a Stanford assistant coach, and having helped lay the ground work for the Huskies Regional Final run in 2014," Meggs said. "I am very excited for our players and the Husky Baseball Nation to have Dave back at the UW.Β As soon as Dave puts on the Purple and Gold, our program will take another step forward."
Β
Prior to arriving at Washington, Nakama was a head coach at San Francisco State (1999-2001) and Mission CC (1992-96). The Honolulu, Hawaii native also has served stints as an assistant at Stanford (2002-09, 1997-98), De Anza CC (1991), Yavapai CC (1989-90), Iowa (1987-88) and Northern Colorado (1985-86).
Β
Nakama, who graduated from Kaiser High School in Honolulu, earned a bachelor's degree in physical education at Willamette (Ore.) in 1984 and a master's in physical education from Northern Colorado in 1986.
Β
Nakama has three adult children: Samantha, Kirk and Brodie.
