SEATTLE – Washington junior Joey Morgan was the first of three Huskies to be selected in the 2017 Major League Baseball Draft when he heard his named called in the third round, 95th overall by the Detroit Tigers in Tuesday's second day of the amateur draft. Junior right-handed pitcher Noah Bremer was selected three rounds later, picked in the sixth round, 194th overall by the Texas Rangers and senior outfielder Jack Meggs was chosen in the 10th round, 291st overall by the Oakland Athletics.
It marks the first time since 2009 that three Huskies were selected in the first 10 rounds of the Draft.
Morgan (Sisters, Ore.) becomes the third highest selection in Lindsay Meggs' eight years as Washington's coach. The only catcher in Husky history to be selected higher than Morgan was his predecessor behind the plate, Austin Rei, who was the 81st overall pick in the third round of the 2015 draft.
Morgan was a 2017 Baseball America Second Team All-American, a two-time All-Pac-12 selection and 2017 All-Pac-12 Defensive Team member. In three years, Bremer has a 16-11 record with a 2.88 ERA in 47 appearances. He ranks among the Huskies best all-time in career starts (T6th, 40), innings pitched (3rd, 284.0), career strikeouts (6th, 205) and single-season strikeouts (7th, 103 in 2017).
Meggs (Bellevue, Wash.), the son of UW's head coach, Lindsay, ended his career ranked fourth all-time in Husky history in both games played (212) and at bats (692). He hit .253 in 178 career starts with six home runs and 66 RBIs. He was 2017 All-Pac-12 Honorable Mention, 2016 All-Pac-12, 2016 All-Pac-12 Defense and named three times to the Pac-12 All-Academic Honorable Mention team.
As a senior, Meggs hit .265 with three home runs, led the Huskies with 40 runs scored and tied for the team lead with 15 double. He was fourth on the team with 53 hits and ranked third with 19 extra-base hits.
