Softball Shuts Down Utah In Five Innings
May 11, 2017 | Softball
SALT LAKE CITY – After scoring at least one run in the first four innings of Thursday night's game, the No. 8 Washington (41-11, 14-8 Pac-12) softball team shut down the No. 13 Utah Utes (33-12-13-7), 12-1, in five innings.
Kirstyn Thomas and Taylor Van Zee each blasted a home run during the series opener at Dumke Family Softball Stadium.
Morganne Flores and Van Zee helped lead the Huskies to victory after collecting three RBIs each.
Taran Alvelo (26-6) gave up only four hits during her five innings in the circle, striking out two and walking none.
Washington's bats were hot at the start of the game, scoring two runs in the first inning. Sis Bates got things going with a single to left center. Casey Stangel was issued a walk, moving Bates to second. Flores reached first on a fielder's choice, advancing Bates to third. Van Zee and Julia DePonte finished the inning off with back-to-back RBI singles to give the Huskies a 2-0 advantage.
Utah got one run off one hit in the bottom of the first inning, the only run the Utes would score all night. Alvelo set down 11-straight hitters after allowing the first-inning run and gave up just two harmless singles in Utah's final at bat.
The Huskies scored five more runs in the second inning, beginning with a bunt laid down by Kelly Burdick. Ali Aguilar singled through the left side, allowing Burdick to reach third, who then scored off a passed ball. Back-to-back walks issued to Bates and Stangel loaded the bases for Flores who hit a bases-clearing double deep to left field. Van Zee then bunted to get on base. The fifth and final run of the inning came after Van Zee attempted to steal second and was tagged out, but not before Flores ran home from third.
In the third inning, Thomas hit a solo home run on the 1-1 pitch from Utah's Katie Donovan (15-9).
Washington's offense pushed four more runs across in the fourth inning, beginning with a single from Flores. With pinch runner Alyssa Simons on first, Van Zee hit a two-run home run, her sixth of the season. Thomas was then walked and advanced to second after Burdick singled. Aguilar hit a single though the right side, plating Thomas. Washington's final run came from Bates who reached on a fielding error that allowed Burdick to score.
The Pac-12 rivals will continue their series tomorrow at 5 p.m. PT. The game will be aired live on the Pac-12 Network with Elise Woodward and Teri Goldberg on the air.
