Washington Wins In Eight Innings At Utah

SALT LAKE CITY – The No. 8 Washington Huskies (42-11, 15-8 Pac-12) defeated the No .13 Utah Utes (33-13, 13-8 Pac-12), 4-2, in eight innings Friday at Dumke Family Softball Stadium to claim a series win.
Morganne Flores knocked in the winning runs with a two-run double in the top of the eighth, giving her 60 RBIs on the season.
Taylor Van Zee once again led the Husky offense, going 3-for-4. She had six hits on her last nine at bats.
Utah jumped ahead on a RBI single from Anissa Urtez in the first inning.
It took the Huskies six innings to score, but the runs came in on a two-run double from Van Zee. Ali Aguilar was hit by a pitch and advanced on a sacrifice bunt from Sis Bates. Casey Stangel walked and Amirah Milloy entered as pinch runner for the senior lefty. Flores reached first on a fielder's choice, moving Aguilar to third. Van Zee stepped up to the plate and hit a double to the gap in outfield, plating Aguilar and pinch runner Alyssa Simons.
Washington's lead didn't last long as Utah's BreOnna Castaneda hit an RBI single.
After finishing seven innings tied at 2-2, the teams moved on to extra innings and it was Washington who came out on top. Bates singled to left field and Stangel earned her second walk of the night. Flores then doubled on a 3-2 pitch to send the two home.
Utah got one hit in the bottom of the frame, but the Husky defense held on to the lead for the win.
Pitchers Samantha Manti, Madi Schreyer and Taran Alvelo all saw time in the circle, but it was Alvelo (27-6) who ended the night with the win after allowing no runs and striking out two.
The Huskies and Utes will conclude the regular season tomorrow at noon PT. Washington will learn its postseason fate on Sunday at 7 p.m. PT when the NCAA bracket is revealed on ESPN 2.
