Dawgs Split, Jones And Scambray Earn Big Win
April 09, 2017 | Beach Volleyball
SANTA MONICA, Calif. – Washington finished up a stretch of five matches over three days this afternoon at Ocean Park Beach in Santa Monica, falling in a close 3-2 battle with No. 8 Arizona before sweeping Concordia, 5-0, to come home on a high note. The Dawgs (2-4) were led by juniors Crissy Jones and Tia Scambray who posted a huge win at No. 1 against Arizona's All-American duo of Madison and McKenna Witt, last year's Pac-12 runners-up. Melanie Wade and Anna Crabtree were also 2-0 today.
"It was great to see what the level of play is before the Pac-12 tournament and see where we need to be as a group," said Head Coach Jonathan Winder on the weekend as a whole. "It really gave us a good picture for where we can improve. We definitely showed we can compete at the top of the lineup. Crissy and Tia were fantastic and Cassie and Courtney played really well at times. It's kind of trying to figure out the best combination of players at 3-4-5 there to see if we can get a little stronger moving forward."
While UW was unable to pull the upset against the four top-10 teams it faced, the Dawgs had at least one win in all four matches.
"Arizona's the number eight team in the country, and we were right there," said Winder. "Long Beach State is number five and we easily could have won 3-2 as we were in two three setters at the very end, and tied halfway through the third sets. Certainly I think our team has more confidence today than when we started this tournament knowing we can hang with these teams. We know we have a lot more we can get better at."
The Huskies will be back in California next week but in the northern territory, starting with a match on Thursday against Sacramento State in Folsom, Calif. and followed by duals against Pac-12 opponents California, Oregon, and Stanford.

Vs. No. 8 Arizona

Washington faced the Wildcats for the second time ever today, and it was UW's fourth match in a row against a top-8 opponent. Arizona came in with a 12-7 record, led by the Witt twins, one of the top teams in the nation who were All-Pac-12 First Team selections a year ago.

Jones and Scambray faced the Witts twice last season, losing both, but one loss went to 21-19 in the third set. The Husky duo got over the hump today, posting identical 21-18 set wins for perhaps their biggest career win thus far. That also put the Huskies up 1-0 in the match.

Arizona evened the match with a 21-11, 21-12 win at No. 3 over Shayne McPherson and Destiny Julye. The No. 2 and No. 4 matches were close in all sets, but the Huskies were unable to get to 21 first. Courtney Schwan and Cassie Strickland lost a tight 21-18, 21-19 match to Olivia Macdonald and Olivia Hallaran at No. 2. Arizona clinched the win with a victory for Mason/Burling at No. 4 over Carly DeHoog and Lindsay Chalmers, 21-16, 21-15.

Senior Melanie Wade and junior Anna Crabtree earned the second UW point in the only three setter of the match. They outlasted Halli Amaro and Brooke Burling, 21-18, 13-21, 15-13 to make the final score 3-2.

Vs. Concordia

The Huskies picked up their second win of the season with a solid sweep of Concordia of Irvine to finish up the weekend. Head Coach Jonathan Winder also continued to mix up the lineup in the third through fifth spots in the order, with positive results.

Jones and Scambray followed up their big win over Arizona with another straight set win, 21-14, 21-11, over Rose/Grove at the No. 1 position for the first point of the match.

Crabtree and Chalmers teamed up for the first time at the No. 5 position, and they made it 2-0 with a 21-9, 21-15 win over Brown/Anthony.

Another new tandem, McPherson and Wade, clinched the win at No. 4, pulling out the first set 22-20 and then rolling in the second set, 21-10.

Strickland and Schwan made it 4-0 with a 21-19, 21-19 win at No. 2 over Concordia's Tran and Napier, and then Destiny Julye and Carly DeHoog teamed together for the first time at No. 3, and came back from dropping the first set, 19-21, to win the second set 21-16 and take the third, 15-8, to finish the sweep.
